I know we have had this discussion before, but I was wondering if people agree that the default largest size should be increased to 720px permanently.
Looking at other photography sites out there, and also looking at our portfolio photos on DPC, I feel that 640px just isnt doing many of our photos justice.

Did something change in the average size of screens for users of the site or something ? |

No !
No change is needed.

I haven't been here that long, but this has been debated before and the agruement was that for most people the 640 size works best for most viewers to see the photos without having to scroll their screen too mucn to see it. [/url] |

one discussion is here
and a second is here.
I think we even did a poll on this not too long ago. The consensus seemed to be to leave the dimensions as they are. |

People seem to be able to squeeze some pretty great images out of those 640 pixels to be honest.
Much larger and there'd be scrollarama going on with practically every photo.
A better idea might be to get those folk who currently submit photos with a max size of about 300 odd pixels to take note and start sending in full-size images ;) |

Those 720 pixel Free Studies are already like that with vertical crops. It's kind of a pain in the hiney to have to close all the menu bars and tabs in Firefox, just to be able to vote.
Don't get me wrong, I like 720 pixel Free Studies, but don't think every challenge should be 720.

i'm with you alex, but i have a feeling there are too many diehard 768 people out there. 700 is what i see on most other sites but oh well. 640 on a 1024/768 screen should require no scrolling to see the image (just some to get to the image). on my personal site, i cap my heights at 600 and that plus the extra space make it a tight fit for some. |

Better still... limit Alexsaberi to 300 pixels to give others a chance. ;-) |

I used to be against the 720px thing, but I've changed my mind. Many things look better in the bigger sizes. It's like I said that my D70 viewfinder was big enough, until I looked trough the D200. :)

I say we keep the current dimensions(640). A larger image requires that DCP increase their DASD (hard drive) storage space in the long run. I'm not sure if DPC is willing to increase capacity when they don't have to.
I'd rather see more user-friendly enhancements to the site such as "Foward" and "Backward" buttons when perusing members' portfolios and challenge results. In the case of portfolios, when navigation comes to and end of a collection, the "Fwd" button should take then to the next collection. If at the end of all the collections (the last portfolio or end of challenge images), then a dialog pops up to let you know that you are at the end.

I would rather see an increased file size to 200KB instead. I have on many challenges lost quite a bit of detail while reducing the file down to the 150 or lower limit.

Actually I think this one is hurting me on a current challenge. I had initally sized it to 200kb (thinking that was the max) then resized from the original and couldn't get it to look sharp at 150kb. I didn't think 50kb would make a big difference, but I can put the two side by side (the 150kb and the 200kb) and notice a big difference.

I'm for both - increase imagesize and filesize.
No point in increasing to 720px if filesize isn't increased too.

Compared to other places like ISP's, gallerie sites and website hosts the space at DPC, including challenges isn't that big per person.

Bring it on...640 px is so 486 now. Big screens, fast computers...we are ready for the new size on a permanent basis.

I agree with those who seek a filesize increase more than a size increase. For those of us who do highly detailed images at extreme WA, the 150kb filesize isn't cutting it. My 10mm images are regularly coming in at save-for-web quality 58-62, and they really suffer for it. I have to oversharpen them to gain any sense of crisp detail at all. The look a LOT better at 250k...

I'd like to see it increased: I'd much prefer 800x600 as the limit. Note that by limiting height to 600, you allow bigger shots but don't get into the vertical issue some people are worried about.

Do that and vertical shots will be SMALLER than they are now, as would be square-cropped shots...

I don't think anybody is going to argue increasing the file size limit. That's just up to the admins on whether or not that happens.
As for the 640px debate I must admit I love the larger sizes we can do in our portfolios but as has been mentioned nothing new has changed since the last time we had this debate. Those on smaller monitors would get screwed big time. We are never going to be able to show our "work" in the best possible light.
Since we have already had several free study challenges that allowed for larger photos what's the verdict? Was the average score on these photos higher or lower compared to other free studies? Did these extra pixels we were able to cram into our photos make any difference at all in our scores? If not why make the change when it will only adversely effect many of our members while only providing a "luxury" benefit to those on larger screens?
Btw, I'm on a wide angle flat screen monitor with 1600x display capable of 2048x on the wide side. Perhaps maybe we should have a change where we can only enter photos with 2500px on the longest side just so we all get to experience what's it like trying to vote on something you can't see all at once.

As long as the average viewer uses a 1024 X 768 sized screen 640 is a practical upper limit for the vertical without scrolling, though the width could be expanded to 720 or even 800.
A vote was taken sometime back and the majority voted to increase the allowed size to 800 X 800. The down side, of course, is that vertical scrolling would become the norm. I would not want that.
