As photographers improve, so do commenters. Next challenge you might get something more telling such as 'really dull', 'very dull' or even 'extremely dull'. You can't expect everyone to start out at the top of their game.

I received a one liner "boring". Thought about it and agreed. It is a boring image. If the line was "dull" I would have agreed as well. Tells me a lot.

Not all of these guys leave incendiary comments and not all place a question or misstate a fact but those that do know pretty well the effect they have.

I think you're kind of missing the point.

To say an image is "nice" or "great" is pretty uninformative, of course. It's flattering but it doesn't help in any other way. But to say an image is "Dull!" is actually very informative. Think about it: how can I expand on that? IN what way, exactly, could I "add" to my "dull" comment to explain WHY the shot is dull? I can add adjectives, I can use a bigger vocabulary, but how do you quantify a thematic negative like that? Would "dull and lifeless" work better? See what I mean.

It's just dull, maybe; nothing to see, no impression left, time to move on. That's how that commenter felt and it's (to my eyes at least) very valid & useful critique, much more so than "nice" or "fantastic"; these could best be served up with at least passing mention of what it is that makes the image work so well.

Well, just my 2 pesos here, but Dull can be descriptive of the whole shot or just one aspect of it. If the commentor does not specify, the submitter may just assume the there is nothing redeeming about the shot whatsoever.

I have one my images which did not get a comment but I would first think okay, Dull. If I was to leave a comment, it would be something like " The image is sort of flat or dull. I think I see where you were going with the two unrelated items, but the background color is bland, so something brighter perhaps a true white or a bright color would help by causing some contrast on the two items. Also, Some better lighting may have helped." SO, I believe you Can turn a "Dull" comment into something much more by giving some feedback on what could have helped the image not be "dull".

Edit: In short, the word "Dull" doesn't help much so I'd prefer either a bit more detail on why it is dull or how to keep it from being dull or simply no comment at all as I can't read the commentors mind as to what their interpretation of "dull" is in relation to the many aspects of one's photo.

Btw, I love that Ducky Plays the Mandolin picture. Cracks me up every time. Great shot.

I also think that the issue rises above the comment "dull" I believe that its meaning is amplified because the commenter was hiiden during voting.

Look, we must be our own best critic. Whenever we feel unsure of an image, do not hope and wish that the voters will overlook the shortcomings. Usually they find even more defects. Yes, the object is to learn but group cooperation is not always present. We want comments but resent the put downs yet they serve a purpose but their importance should be weighted against all other comments received on the image. Keep in mind that some folks are not gifted in imparting their feelings. They simply do not care about the consequences of their speech. However, we can gather that our image did not impress them. lol

After the challenge is over visit the commenters profile, get a feel for other comments that have been made by that person. Either the person is a complete commenter at times but wasn't inspired by your image, or this person leaves many short comments without elaboration. Either way you can judge how to approach it afterwards by asking (via PM) for clarification ("what did you mean by dull, can you elaborate please?") - or just ignore it based on what that person's profile tells you.

In the meantime, no big deal...thick skin is part of the game here. Doesn't take too long to get it. Another thing DPC will give you over time is knee-jerk reaction control. That's the hard one to get a handle on. :-)

wasnt me, but i'm not clued up about the technical side of things,

The people who take a comment as timid as "Dull." so personally, should never take their work for professional review. I have and I was told to my face, "You should put down your camera and go back to work at McDonalds.", "This is crap. Who's next?", "Come back when you figure out how your camera works." and lots of other tender words for my best work. You have to have faith in your own vision despite the derision from others.

Never said I was hurt by the comment, just that it pissed me off that it was so "vague" and really didn't say anything at all. Just the same as a "Nice" comment. That's great you take the comment, but what the hell does it mean?
There is ALWAYS going to be someone that tells us we suck, that isn't the issue here. Tell me why.

I wasn't referring to you specifically, but, your initial response seemed to indicate that you did indeed take the "Dull" comment quite personally.

As with so many things, comments are not always laid out so we can understand them at first glance. It would be nice if all comments were detailed, in-depth critiques, but it's not always the case. Sometimes to gain an understanding of a comment, the photographer has to lay it out for themselves.

Look at it as an opportunity to evaluate your work through a different lens.

I appreciate comments a viewers feels the need to write. The majority of comments I receive are either simple positive or simple negative.
My vanity is always stroked when a writer says nothing more than a positive one word comment such as "nice" (especially true if someone like goodman is the author) - it is a sign that the viewer recognizes something in a foto that touches them in some way.
A feeling of depression is my natural response from a negative one word comment, however they are certianly useful to gauge what a specific viewer is feeling about an image.
To some extent, both types of one word comments are fairly useless, except to make one happy or sad - as are extended versions, a short sentence of simple praise (w/words like - nice, great, beautiful etc.) and/or simple rejection (w/words like - no quality, flat, dull etc.) A look at your vote for a entry expresses much of the same, but without putting a face on it. It is always interesting to see in writing how individuals are responding at what ever time they write - during a vote or after.
I would not describe these kinds of comments which swing one way or the other as especially useful.
"Useful suggestions" and I am not sure what that means to everyone - however to me, among other items like technical - edit observations; & options of subject/aesthetic/style/social comment, it may include a dialogue of enthusiastic & encouraging middle ground between like & dislike.

I agree with the disagree.

I disagree with the agreement to disagree. lol!

Though some pictures are thoroughly terrible that does not mean there is nothing good about them.

It is easier to criticize than to praise.

I would love to get a one word negative comment. Right now my "Ducky" entry is scoring a 5.61. I have gotten two comments thus far and here are the words used (broken up so as to not identify the commenters):

Great, Nice, Effective, Nothing I can think of to improve this, Elegant, 9!

Those are the words used to describe my composition, color and lighting. So basically I nailed the technicals yet can only muster a 5.61 in a silly ducky challenge. I could argue that getting those postive comments is more negative than your negative "dull" comment. Here I am nailing the technicals and my shot isn't DNMC yet it's scoring a measly 5.61. I wish someone would say something like "lame" so I'd know exactly what is wrong with it.

Funny you should mention beer as a lens. I just read this article in Rangefinder about a guy that uses liquids sandwiched between 2 plates of glass as a filter.

The last comment you gave me wasn't even one word. I only got a single exclaimation mark "!" ...and a Favorite

Best comments I've recieved in weeks, btw.

Personally, I'd be happy to get it

For one, someone looked at it

two, it struck them enough to type something

three, It was advice to make your photo more interesting

Which I think is a useful comment

and based off of your reaction, I can see why they did it anonymously

lol, you make it sound as though I've done this before. Why isn't there and "Ctrl+Z" hotkey for life?

In an effort to keep this thread going (since it obviously hasn't run its course), I am going to respectfully disagree with your disagreement with the agreement to disagree. I think it is MUCH easier to praise, rather than criticize - at least on this site.

Ha!! I won something! :-) Do I get an honorary ribbon of some kind?

I think I'll put that as one of my goals so I can mark it off. Oh, and until Kirsty stated it was dull (in so many words), the only comment I had after the fact was my own, dully noting (bad spelling intended) the complete and utter lack of comments.
