Potential hijack/redirect, but it is related to commenting...
Isn't the real challenge in giving a critique formulating your own opinion and possibly providing direction based on your own experience and observations? Seems to me that by reading the other comments it would unduly influence your perception before formulating your own.
I was in management (district manager) for many years and part of my responsibility was evaluating existing managers and management candidates. One of my policies was not to look at any prior reviews completed by other managers that the person I was evaluating had previously rec'd. I wanted to make my own conclusions based on observed performance without any outside influence. It was an interesting read sometimes to go back and look at prior performance reviews done by others after I'd completed mine. :) |

One more thought: one word is better than NOTHING. Like others have said, at least they did make a comment. Plus, with the number of entries we have to vote on these days, a long lengthy explanation is not always possible for people who work, have other things to do, and can barely take the time to look at images and cast a score. To me DULL is very descriptive and it could refer to the subject matter, or just the overall flatness of the image in general. Don't get your panties in a wad so to speak. I do the same thing. Sometimes somebody leaves a comment and it seems to be so out of left field that I'm thinking "HUH?" but once I think about it for a day or two, I figure, that's what the viewer thought. Art is an expression of you and the comment, is the viewer's expression of how it made them feel, or what they thought when viewing it.
Oh, I guess I rambled a little. Here's my one word summation of what I just said : CHILL.

A word to the OP. Whatever you may have thought of the usefulness (or lack thereof) of this comment, it does not violate any site rules. calling out the commentor and/or name-calling is never an appropriate reaction, and is not acceptable here. Please re-read the forum rules, specifically rule 11.
I will remove the personal attack from you post, however I'm not removing the thread, since I believe that the feedback you've gotten on this will inform you, should you take it to heart. |

It's funny that the two most prevalent threads started about comments are:
1. threads attacking commentors for non-positive comments
and
2. threads complaining about not getting enough comments for a low-scoring picture
hmmm.... I can't help but wonder if there's some connection here..... hmmm....... |

I usually don't post a word like dull. I usually go for a more escalated vocabulary. I would have said "Bla". |

I received zero (0) comments on one of my recent challenge entries. I would have been delighted with "dull" or "boring" or any of the comments in the other thread on things you want to type but don't hit submit on. I'd even take "blah" or "what were you thinking?" or "You could sell your camera on eBay and really come out ahead in this game." |

I had one that said "Dull?" as if they are asking a question and don't know their own opinion. "look man, if you don't know what you're thinking I sure as the Heck don't know what's going on up there".

These are quite humorous and help take the edge of the old debate of "Where the HECK are all the comments? or even just ONE comment" threads.

Waa Waaa Waaa! Someone though my photo was dull.
Would it have been more helpful if they wrote:
"This photo is uninspiring, lacks emotion or purpose and is not very interesting." (AKA - Dull)
Grow up.

LOL here too...
All I can say is that I learned a lot from this thread: on both giving and receiving feeback, and I am sure I will be more generous to leaving them as well as more open to receiving those ones "not so aligned to my ears" with a different eyes. |

Maybe you should have read the whole thread including my response to what people have said instead of spouting that off.

I've only entered 4 challenges and my scores have not been above 5. In fact they are in the basement. But that does not stop me form trying. Each challenge is a learning experience. The comments that have been given when not sharkey have been helpfull. The sharky ones I'm learning to disregard. I like the comments that tell me how to improve for the next time. |

Right there with you, I've got my 4th and 5th entries in right now. One continues in the 4 range (4.48 at the moment) and one FINALLY has broken the 5.0 mark (5.25). I'm finding about 1 out of every 4 comments useful. Even if they hate it, if they can put some constructive critique/comment to it, then it's a "Users comment was helpful".

If you think leaving one word comments piss people off..try leaving only your score as a comment!
I had people who I left my score with pissed off, I had people I didn't even LEAVE a score with pissed off, I had Site Council telling me to stop or they would delete my comments or something like that.
Trust me...you can leave less than a word and tick people off even more...you people are just not trying!!!!
I don't vote or comment anymore really...Unless I absolutely love a photo or want to talk about the photo with the photographer.

I had a bad experience a few weeks back when I decided to vote and comment on all entries in Soft focus. OK, a bad challenge to comment on as what is and isn't soft focus is based on the viewers personal interpretation and that could be way off! But, you hear so many people complaining so often that they don't get enough comments, when I decided its about time I did comment I wasn't expecting to receive so many PM's telling my how wrong I was or how dare I say that or who did I think I was.
I even had someone (like has happened in this thread) post my comment in the scores thread. To call someone out in a thread because of THEIR OPINION to me is rude and just goes to persuading that person they shouldn't bother commenting in the future.
I have never left a one word comment and I suppose when I receive them they are a little irritating but it wouldn't spur me on to go and start a whole thread directed at that one person. I'd take onboard what they said, if I thought it was bull I'd just ignore it but if even in just one word they were telling me what other voters might be thinking then at least I have learnt something for the next time.
Oh and the above is just my humble opinion.
