Please take a look at my alcatraz pic...
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=40464
I have already cloned out some glare from the search light hitting the lens....but I can't seem to brighten it the right way so that you can see "the rock" more clearly...
please feel free to plug it into your editing program and give it a shot. Maybe it doesn't need lightened even, I don't know. All comments welcome, thanks for looking.

yeah exactly! thats' cool, thanks general - i wasn't even sure if that was possible ( my photoshop skills are pretty new ) I think that i like it better that way showing the actual rock. ( i don't have the bulb feature on my cam so 16 sec. was the best i could do on this shot - you edit was exactly what i was going for)
could you maybe let me know what tool you used? I don't want to "steal" your edit.
thanks again for your time general - much appreciated!

no problem...I love to play in photoshop!
I put a 30% filter (a hex code close to the sky) on everything but the rock, used curves, took out a bit of the yellow, and I think thats it.
General, awesome job..I love it! |

Just send me your email address and I'll send you the Photoshop file to work with. I just used a combination of selection tools to select the upper sky area/light buildings (easier to select), inverted the selection to make it be the lower half, feathered it by three pixels, and applied a drastic tone curve to the bottom of the photo.
You should clean up the selection (you can edit the alpha channel) to get rid of the halo effect, and play with the tone curve to get the range/effect you want. This was a quickie (5-10 minutes) rough-draft job. |

well I wasn't sure how much you wanted it suttle or not but here is a post for a bit if you like grab it, I just dodged a bit and did a duplicate layer with the highpass sharpen afterwards, I liked the suttle effect but I always opt for dark over artifacts and andbleeding colors, anywhos I just like playing in photoshop like the rest here LOL

there ya go I think that will work, please tell me if it doesn't :) my picture is a hint more suttle but it does accentuate the idea of it being on a rock as well :) I love dodge and burn, really powerful tools in photoshop |

its in the tool bar one of the tools, it works just like clone or erase, dodge lighetns and bringsout highlights at the expense of color, and burn bringsout colors and lightens, they are indisposable tools, almost more useful than clone, and more so for some people, just slowly move over each tool and left click for their names in the toolbar list and poke around looking at the tools, you will find it, and Iam sure you know about opacity and levels for the tools, play with those and tone them down so your efects aren't so insane :) and the highpass sharpen method leaves less artifacts than unmask sharpen for future reference, its a great sharpening method, you create a dyplicate layer, go to "other filters" pick high pass and well its kinda advanced you then go to layers, opacioty of 60 to 70% and soft light or hard light, I always use soft light, I think you can find that method at adobe if you forget, but it seriously works better than unmask sharpen 2 great tips I always use :) |

In Elements its in the toolbox or(Shift + O) should bring up dodge. (Shift + J) should bring up dodge.
Dodge= lighten up image
Burn= darken the image
In Elements Dodge looks like a lollipop and Burn looks like a right hand making a "O"

I think the subtle one works better because of pixelation. Maybe a little cloning on the water where you see a "u" shaped. The original is actually pretty nice. Did you use your Kodak with the 10x Optical zoom?

Yeah, I was on full 10x optical zoom on that one! I took it on the Aquatic park pier in front of Ghiradelli square at about 1am with 16 sec. exposure time (the full amount i could)
Thank you both by the way for the help in finding the tool

I took my "Life " shot right where you shot the sea lions down at the wharf. I was going to go back there and get the sealions for the "at rest" but because of the glare I decided not to. Just bought a circular polariser filter so I can take pictures of the water and not have it affect my camera.
Great pictures on you website. You lucked out with the sunshine. A lot of times its really foggy near the GG Bridge and you can barely see it.
I would love that 10x zoom.

yeah the 10x is awesome - greatly improves your options.
I want to get a polarizer lens too - does that work well for cloud shots too?

They are 2 different polarisers (circular),(linear)you have to found out which one your camera can use. Circular is double the price of a linear one.
The polariser filter cuts down reflections on water, glass , or any reflective surface. In landscape photos is suppose to deepen the blues in the sky on a nice day and give the clouds more contrast. Helps them look fluffier.
Grey skies in S.F. today to no chance to try it on the sky to bring out the blues.
On glass it really makes a huge difference when taking pictures through it. You can see you goldfishes without see that annoying reflection.
