Make sure the image is in sRGB before saving for web -- convert to sRGB, not profile, if it is not.

I often have the same kind of problem - the image seems to lose a little saturation and the hues shift a bit when I save for web. I've checked and I always work in sRGB (at least when I go Image -> Mode it shows "RGB Color"). Anyone any ideas at all?
Thanks. |

Image/Mode/RGB Color is how PS is working with the images. That is, when you view the channel pallet it will show Red, Green and Blue channels. If you select any of the other options in the top section it will work with those channels instead.
Three places in PS to check for settings:
1) Edit/Color Settings... -- set to the RGB working space to the profile you want to use. Best to use sRGB (listed followed by a version number) until you have a specific reason not to.
2) Image/Mode/Convert to Profile... -- if it says the current profile is anything other than sRGB, convert it to sRGB (again followed by version number in the listing) before saving for the web.
3) View/Proof Colors -- You do not usually want a checkmark next to this. Proofing colors allows you to see the image as it would look on a different device (such as a printer) if you have a profile for that device.

actually, under "view/proof setup" it should be checked by "monitor RGB" and "proof colors" should be checked... that's how i've gotten it to work anyway. it will desaturate your colors on the screen, so you will edit based on that. then when you go to "save for web" it will look the same. i only use this when editing for DPC. |

Proofing is like a filter that is placed over the image to display it as it would look on some other medium (print, etc). Turning the filter on only to have it display exactly what is underneath it is the same as not turning the filter on.
Proofing is a part of the feature set devoted to color management [i]across multiple types of devices[i]. If your workflow is not color managed (profiles for the different devices and such) set everything to sRGB and turn everything else off. You will know when your workflow needs it, but in the meantime turning it off saves a lot of headaches.
