With all the talk of shiny new fast computers, i'm just wondering what sort of computer everyone runs, and who's using the slowest computer lol? Obviously it doesn't count if your using MSPaint as your photo editing tool :P ... post up your comp specs, and lets see who's getting by on the least for their photoshopping

personally, i'm using photoshop cs2 on a P4 1.6Ghz computer with 512mb RAM... yes i'm quite aware of how crappy that is, but currently the DSLR has drained all funds so no chance of a new comp in the near future lol :P

what are you guys/gals using?

up until this summer i was using 1.5ghz 256mb with geforce 2 mx card (complete with homemade superglued pennies for heatsink) as my main photo editing machine, took a good 10 mins just to boot photoshop

I used to use a 600mhz athlon with 256 ram. It was slow, but it worked. Upgraded about a year ago, but I put up with that thing for good three years.

Well, I have a P4 3.0GHz, 1 GB RAM, a lot of hard drive space, an nvidia geforce 7800 GS and a dvd burner.

As for the crappiest computer I have ever used, that would be my first, a sharp hunk of scrap that used audio casettes for storage and programs.
Then along came the XT. Ahhhh, those were the days . . . . . . . . NOT!

I've got CS running on a 800mhz eMac with 756mb RAM - pretty darn slow but its better than having to use Picasa on the work computer (with similar specs) like I was doing until a few months ago.

I think I've got everyone hear beat for the "crappiest computer," but then again, I'm the guy who started the thread about state-of-the-art computers.

I'm currently running an AMD K6-2 400 MHz with 384 MB ram. I doubt that few here are running an antique like I am.

Is it an eMachine? Check the cooling system...add a fan or two in the case. Again if it is a eMachine, check the rating on the P/S.

Right now I'm on a 1.0 GHz Pentium III with 128MB RAM, Windows 2000; I do most of my editing in Photoshop 5.0.

My desktop is a Dell with a 2 Ghz Intel Celeron Processor with 640MB of RAM. Two hard drives 27GB and 80GB. Windows XP SP2. Not a speed demon with CS2 but will last until after Windows Vista is released. Then I will upgrade.

Notebook is a Sony Vaio Intel Pentium III 750MHz 20GB HD & 128MB RAM, running Ubuntu Linux. It's much faster as a Linux machine than it was a Windows machine and still is able to run PS7.

P4 3.0Ghz (2Mb L2 cache) with Hyper threading, 2Gb Ram, 1x160GB HDD, 1x 80GB HDD, 1x 40GB HDD, Sapphire X800GT, Photoshop CS2. Run well.

my first computer was a pentium II 266Mhz with 64MB RAM and 8GB HDD. I wasn't editing photos back then...

A Pentium I 90Mhz, 64mb ram, but it is for some old dos stuff, not for photowork.
Had (we/our family business that I do the computer stuff for among other things) an early '80s Morrow MD2 system running into the mid nineties. That one used a 4 Mhz processor, 64kb RAM, no hardrive, just a dual 5.25 floppy system. It must still be on a shelf somewhere and it still works, the only reason why it doesn't run is because of a crappy cable that you can't get so easily anymore.

I believe my current personal system runs an Athlon XP2400 with 1Gb of RAM.

At work we have a PowerComputing Macintosh clone running System 7.5.3. I still have some Mac SE's running System 6, but I haven't booted one for a while ...

Where I am high speed internet is still not available so we still use dial up. It's definetly slow loading pictures and webpages! And it's about three years old to. In December I'm getting a new iMac!

The quickest way to impair a computer is to upgrade the OS past the version that came installed on it. A machine that came configured with Windows 98 shouldn't be running XP.

Likewise when Windows Vista comes out, it will severely cripple a machine that came with XP.

Minimal and optimal specs for OS's change with versions. If you want the latest bells and whistles from the latest, greatest OS, save your money and upgrade your computer, rather than buying the OS then later discovering you need to upgrade your hardware.

And yes, the same goes for Macs.
