Best of luck to all the participants. I sure do hope my submission does OK, since I definately do not expect a placing with it. There is a lot to be learned and hopefully the community here will be a great help.

PS - After submitting that photo, I took an even better shot that shouts MACRO shot. But I will stay with the original. Here is the link of the other one just for fun..

The problem with doing a macro shot on subjects with a relatively large difference in depth between the various parts of the subject is, some of it is going to be out of focus. Your cat pic is a perfect example: The hair at the base of the ear (or the left) is in focus but almost everything else isn't. That's because the macro mode has a VERY small depth of field. That means when it focuses on something (in your case the hair near the ear), anything else that is more then say 1/2 inch in depth in front or behind the focal point is not going to be in focus.

The best subject for macro mode is something flat with your camera perfectly perpendicular to the flat surface. Obviously that is NOT a requirement, just the optimum situation. Anyway good luck on your entry!

I think you mean the camera (or at least the film plane) should be parallel to the subject.

I just wanted to say that i haven't seen a bad shot yet after 100 some...i'm taking a rest now to give the next 100 a "fresh eye" =`)

I don't think that I've give out so many high scores in a comp yet - great job everyone! It's a pleasure to score this one.

Well mine for one is doing sooooooo badly for what I thought it would. I think there are a lot that are going to be marked low for not being super close.

mine is scraping the floor in about the lowest score I´ve seen.

and its my first member challenge:o

This is not uncommon in a challenge. The extremely closeup images will probably do best in a lot of cases...

ahhhh I thought I would not be impacted in this challenge by a low score because I think my picture is good. But it makes me grumpy this morning that it is at 4.4.
Not good. I already did not quite understand the so bad ranking of my previous entry ... that's going to be 2 in a row.

I thought there where some really outstanding shots this time.

I really thought I'd get to place in the top 10 w/ mine, but now I'm sure I'll be lucky to get a top 50. dang was sure I had a really good one this time.

last night w/ 2 votes, 7.000, 4 votes 6.0000 and now under 6.. ackk

that's what I get for being sure of myself.

My votes seem to be all over the board. Just look:

39 votes - 5.5641 (not bad)
40 votes - 5.6000 (received high score... woohoo!)
42 votes - 5.5714 (recieved low scores... grrrrr!)
43 votes - 5.6047 (received 9 ot 10... woohoo!)

I'll be lucky if I hit 6.0 and stay there. If I do, I'll be a very happy Canadian, eh?

Good luck folks.

I hope all you FINE people will be nice to my macro shot. :) My camera doesn't take very good macro shots, so it didn't come out like I had hoped. BUT, I'm ready to take the bad with the good......:)

Christy, thanks for the great score on my shot, but from my score (starting at almost 6 now down to 4.90) you're the only one that appreciated it....

Just remember, that 5.6 (Canadian) is worth 7 US.

Other way around...5.5 U.S. is worth 7.67 Canadian.

You are not alone my friend, I see 40 something votes and approaching a 4. This is also my FIRST challenge. It just makes me want to think about my shot(s) more.

macro with my autofocus piece of junk isnt easy.
compared to a higher end camera

i only have a 12" marco distance - no closer.
yet folks seem to like the photo none-the-less.
still scoring low though - but decent comments

its a bit frustrating because i can tell which shots were taken with
a better camera.

Is it just me, or do there seem to be a lot of entries that aren't really close enough to be consider macro? close-up maybe, but not really a macro?

From the challenge details:
You need not specifically use your macro feature, but your image should be a close-up shot.

So close-up-but-not-macro is fine, especially if your camera hasn't got a great macro function like soup's.

maybe i'm just nitpicking, but then i guess the challenge should really be close-up or something. if it's not really a true macro, then why call it as such? i dunno...

It is mentioned in the challenge description that it is a macro and close-up challenge. You do realise if we made it a true macro challenge that most people couldn't enter ? and for example, the Fuji S602Z can't actually take a macro shot without using additional lenses, so you probably haven't taken a macro shot either if you entered ?
