I still think the date field should not default to the current date, but have a drop-down for the day, month and year (that way, the different date formats used in different parts of the world shouldn't be an issue, either). That, and a comment next to it that the photo has to be taken during the challenge dates unless otherwise specified in additional rules should at least cut down significantly on the honest mistakes...

At "Old DPC" the exposure dates itself were shown. Shot must be taken between xx-xx-xxxx and yy-yy-yyyy. That was a lot clearer in comparisson to 'Your photograph must be taken within the submission dates for the challenge.'
A clear date triggers the thinking process a lot better then a sentence.

Great, looking forward to it. "Dream of the past" is among the best photos I've ever seen in the challenges. Hope to see your work in future challenges.

Hi.

How do you check if the exif has been modified?
There are a lot of utilities that can be used to modify the exposure date (to accomodate the legal/solar hour, for example).

EXIF help. Also read and follow the rules.

If you work on the original the EXIF information will be lost. So never work on an original, only work on a copy.

Also read the complete rules every time you submit. Many alterations may not me legal.

Faidoi, what you pointed out is clear.

But I wonder if you can tell if the original exif is being modified. Is there a crc somewhere in the photo? a checksum? Otherwise it would be far too easy to alterate the data in the original file...

If someone really wanted to they could adjust the EXIF data invisibly - the assumption is that if someone's gonna what to cheat that badly they probably will. EXIF is really just the simple tool for a date check, it's certainly not infallible.

To answer your specific question, I'm 95% certain there is no crc of checksum hidden in the jpg and even if their were, any program allowing you to edit the EXIF would also update the crc.

I too would like to see this 'Burning Man' shot. Redmapper where can I find it?

This is my first time here, and was wondering what the restrictions are on image manipulation.

I can see that some images have most definitely been manipulated where as others seem raw.

Please help the newbie....!!

Rules are made to be followed. I find it hard to DQ over dates here and there when I've seen MANY photos posted months before a challenge on another site then used in a challenge. Actually, I brought one photo to light but it remained because "we can't check them all". Maybe if it had placed then it might have been DQ. Dates and alterations outside the rules will be broken. People try to get by with things. Let's just hope most are caught. We just have to vote and wait on the rollover to find out who won and who, I mean what we shoot next :)

Great photo btw :)

Unfortunately, MOST cameras lose their date info when changing batteries. Something you should be aware of when taking photos for challenges, I guess.
