I've seen some brilliant photos of pelicans from all over Australia. They are an excellent subject and often seen in stunning landscapes with boundless opportunities for shots including sunrises, sunsets, and water reflections.

Perhaps we could have a challenge that will showcase the best pelican image compositions, we could even open the challenge up to 'water birds' in general to cater for those living in pelican-free environments.

How about "Bird Shot"

Leave the description to the shooters imagination.

Oh yeah, okay. I like the idea of water birds.

Just birds is a good idea too, especially because I really like seeing other people's environments through their own eyes, and this would be a great way to do that.

Nice one Tomfoolery.

Ummm...just to clarify for poor old Tom...the challenge details must stipulate whether the bird is to be feathered or not...hmm!! Okay..let's try that again....the challenge details must stipulate that the bird is not to be human!!! Yeah...that's better!!

I'd be up for it, also. I live in Calgary, Alberta, and there are not supposed to be pelicans here outside of the zoo.

For the last 3 years though, we have had pelicans in the summer, and they all hang out on this one weir in the main river. It's fascinating!

This would give me an excuse to go down there and take some pictures.

Last pelican I saw was 5000 miles away - can we have this widened to any old wildlife?

Oh I could get into a Pelican Challege.

What..like this one. I took this one yesterday and I only cropped a small bit off the bottom to even it up with the top.

Herons, and heron shooters, demand equal billing.

A water bird challenge wouldn't be fair to you or to me...just look at my profile page to see why.

I somehow find fantastic opportunities to 'shoot' water birds. Actually, I'm tired of them and have recently been trying hard to break the habit of using them for challenges. I never really noticed that I had entered a third of my challenges with birds.

In the Shapes II challenge I entered an Ibis because of it's curved bill.
In the Blue II challenge I entered a Cormorant with blue eyes against a blue sky.
Free Study was an Anhinga that had just caught a fish.
Best of 2005 was a profile view of a Rutieman's Heron.

These shots were hardly cropped at all because all of these were taking from within 10 feet of the bird, except for the Ibis, which was about 20 feet. And now I've got my 80-400.

So, I'd rather not go back to the birds. But if I have to.......

edited for spelling
