I want/need to start getting some decent lighting gear and backdrops any idea where would be the best place to find some deals.
And what would be the best thing for some one who doesn't have any real studio lighting? |

I am also intersted in any answers, my dream would be to have something i could move easily..
I've seen some sets (two flashlights + softbox) for resonably cheap prices here in the Nederlands but i do not know anything about quality and i would not know where to start looking for what is important
the info is in dutch but i guess you can kind of pick up the specs, if any one can comment on this would be great

I prefer a system with a power pack and strobe heads to monolights. I own 2 1600 WS Speedotron packs and 7 flash heads. Overkill for a beginner, but they have some nice 2 and 3 light kits.
Mostly because it's what I'm used to, but also, with the power pack, you can have a lot of lights going and only use one outlet. With monolights, you have to have an outlet for each light. If they are each rated at 15A and plugged into a single 15A circuit (Not an uncommon thing if shooting in a house) and you have two or more lights pulling max current. You will be spending more time running to reset the breaker than shooting.
(Yes, I know that if they are rated at 15A, they will likely only pull 10 or 12A under full recycling load. Still, two or more on the same circuit will still pull more than 15A and possibly more than 20A combined.)
edit: OK, looking at the AB website, I see they are rated at 8A each, so, it's likely that you could have 2 lights on one 15A circuit with no problem and 3 lights on a 20A circuit.

Yes i was thinking what i want or need is a reflector, background background light, i don't know if i should go with softboxes or umbrellas.
I want to get serious into my photography and the only thing stopping me is lighting.
I've got some friends willing to model for me but all i've got is 2 500watt video lamps so the lights pretty harsh and hot... |

I'd get reflectors (make your own from foamcore), a softbox AND umbrellas.
