That's a lot to spend on a lens! But you're obviously serious. Go for it.

One of the basic elements of the NetFlix business model, and of it's imitators, is that the product being shipped to and from the customer is essentially disposable. If it, the dvd disc, gets lost or damaged in transit - no biggie, burn another one to replace it at minimal cost. This allows them to use flimsy shipping containers and forego insurance. Interchangeable lenses for SLRs are magnitudes away in terms of investment required to maintain an inventory.

Seems like RentGlass.com is growing. They have a wider selection than they did a few months ago. Haven't heard of anyone having a bad experience with them. If they can keep it going it may, in the long run, drive down the price of lenses. That would be nice.

Anybody know of a lens rental company that will cater to Canadians?

I think rentglass.com its a great idea. Not everyone has a local photo equipment rental business nearby and this makes lots of specialty lenses available for a fair price.

I was initially interested in trying some their lenses, but I wanted to know if there was an option to buy them if I liked them. So I wrote them and asked if you could rent to buy, and they replied that they do not have this feature yet, but added that others have asked the same question and that it might be something they would do in the future.

Rent to Own. Would that be a feature like Aarons Furniture or something? Where when you've finally paid it off, you've paid twice what it costs to buy it outright.

Perhpas my wording needs a bit of clarification. I did say rent to buy, but what I meant was simply having the option to buy--at a reasonable price--not a ludicrous gouge like you get with furniture outlets.

Maybe I should rent out my "L" lenses, macro and 1.4X extender. That way I could make some money to buy the 24-105 F/4L IS I want.
