I had some issues with my Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical, today. I was shooting portraits (which I will probably have to reshoot now, geez) and noticed that most of the pics are focused just more on the background than on the subject.
Wednesday, I did a shoot with it and everything is tack sharp. I did some test with some items lined up on my desk and sure enough it is focusing just past the subject.
Anyone have any clues as to why the lens all of the sudden wants the background in focus?

have you made sure you have the focus point set to the correct area? Maybe you have it set on the wrong point by accident

well - is your subject centered too? Maybe you're focus spot is going just to the side of your subject?

we seem to be having similar problems.... shooting on two canon 1ds mkII bodies and using various lenses, we have found that the focus sometimes pulls through the subject - eg the back of the head is then sharp and the face is soft.... begining to become VERY frustrating.
tried it all - focus point set to centre, tripod, - and trust me, there is no camera shake...!
anyone with any info??

What focusing mode are you using? Two things come to mind as possibilities. I don't know exactly what features the Canon bodies offer, but is there a mode that lets the camera choose the subject from the entire frame, and not just the manually set focus point? Particularly if the subject is similar to the background (white dress against a white background...).
The other is if your body allows more than one focus point to be used, perhaps for tracking moving targets.
