I took this photo of Geno's Steaks in south Philly. How do you correct for the blow out sky? This photo is straight out of a rebel xt with the exception of resizing.
Thank you for your help

In the bottom left corner there seems to be a little bit of blue sky among some clouds. Is there just one big cloud above the building? If there is than the photo os fine as it. However if it isn't a cloud, and the sky is in fact blown out, there isnt much you can do. If it was a very pale blue you could burn it a little bit to make it darker. However it appears to be completely washed out and thus there really isnt anything to darken.
(By the way, Pat's cheesesteak right across the street is way better)
: )

leave it as is. Nothing wrong with a blown out sky as long as you properly exposed what it was that you needed to.

You can't do much to "fix" a blown out sky except for replacing it...I hope you don't mind; I added a gradient fill layer to the sky and cloned out the power lines/etc. I cropped in a little, sharpened, and enhanced the color and contrast. I'll remove this after you've had a chance to see it.

How about throwing in some clouds to help it look real....?

It looks fine other than the flags...they also need to be burned in to make it all come together. Right now they are glowing much more than the background...so you can tell the difference in the light.

Thanks everyone for your heplful comments! I have been using your suggestions and did some editing using PS elemets v3.
Used color picker to pick up the sky color from the left side by the power lines.
Magic wand to pic the blown out sky.
Filter - Render -- clouds to modified the sky area
Clone stamp to clean up the ghosting by the flag poles at 70%.
The photo does need more processing to clean it up. However I do think its an improvement. I will keep working on improving the photo and post it on this thread.
Again Thanks everyone.

Really the easiest fix is to go out and shoot a really nice sky and then add it as a new layer.
Not legal at DPC, but it's worth learning to do.

Ok everyone here are 2 of Philly's Famous Steak Eaties. Pats, and Geno's are across the street from one another.
There are several others, maybe I'll start a collection of them
Enjoy
Comments Welcome.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Below is the post processed photo. A fair amount of work using PS elements 3.0.
Comments always welcome.

Isn't the rivalry, or part of the rivalry between these two joints the fact that one uses that cheez-whip or whatever that foam cheese in a spray can type of gunk and the other doesn't? These places look familiar and I remember some show on tv about them. |

Thanks guy's I add the evening shot to my todo list. Will need to use a pod, and watch the traffic, very busy street. It would look cool with the neon glowing. |

Ok, I'm hungry now.
Looking at the two shots of Pat's, it looks like they remodeled (the whole upper floor is different) and dumped Coke for Pepsi. Is that right? |

Now everyone is hungry for Philly cheesesteaks. What about the quality or lack there of regarding the post processed photo?
Also how important is using a calibrated CRT over an LCD monitor?
Comments?
