Our friends have a newborn daughter, and things aren't like they supposed to be. She's on baby-IC and got her brain damaged while she came on this world. I asked them yesterday if they wanted to have photo's, to have some memories. They loved the idea and asked me to ome today. I thoght it also could be a way for me to deal with the situation. I was a bit nervous, because I'm a perfectionist, but when we got there, all was gone when I looked at their little Superbaby.
While shooting, mum got pretty emotional, but some way I was able to "block" my emotions and kept shooting. Superbaby opened her eyes, and that was a very special moment, because it was the first time. I was so happy I was able to grab that shot!
They checked the photo's on the LCD-monitor and they were very happy with the results so far. That made me happy too.
We just got back from the shoot in the hospital and I'm now editing the photo's I took. Now my emotions are coming. It took me quite a while to edit one photo..
Anyway, here's the first one, more to come. I just wanted to share..

Hanneke,
What a wonderful thing you've done!!! The photograph is superb. This is a subject that is very near and dear to me. I'm so glad you were able to put your emotions aside long enough to be able to do this wonderful and difficult service for your friends. I'm sure your friends will be eternally grateful. I applaud you!!!

Hi Lee, I read the thread about "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" yesterday, and I knew you are very near to this kind of photography and a situation like this. I'm happy I could do this for my friends! And I'm happy with your respond in this thread. Thank you :)

thank you :)
This whole situation brings everything in life in perspective. I mean, there are so many things more important then for example whining about scores ;-)
Live life to the max and enjoy every single second.

Hanneke
These are beautiful.
A friend of mine in the US also had a problemmatic birth and her daughter also suffered brain damage. That was ten years ago and she is still with us.
It taught me a lot about life that I have only just begun to recognise.
With respect

what a great thing to be able to do. I wish we had pictures like that from when my son was in the NICU. we only have one or two "good" photos from that entire 4 months. I regret that alot but my attention was on him and nothing else. I didnt want a moment of my time with him to be seen through a veiwfinder/lens instead of eye to eye. i'd have loved for someone else to take nice pictures of him/us. I'll be awaiting the update. |

I second what my wife says. all those months and we only have a handfull of pics and those were taken with a not so great camera. I am sure that the parents will thank for years to come. many of us have photography as a huge part of our lives and are always trying to get cool photos and make art, but it is important to not forget that photos are one of the best ways to remember momments and you have done a great job at making sure that they will not forget those moments. |

thank you guys! your kind words mean a lot to me.
sweet of you to still post in this thread.
a small & quick update.
Superbaby is doing pretty good, looking at the circomstances. Mum & dad are still at home for her. Their life went upside down and back. They always try to feed her with a bottle, but her stomach can't deal with the milk. That's why she has a tube in her nose (don't know the English word) and when the bottle didn't work, they feed her that way.
For the rest she's always gonna need help in her life... but I'm very glad she's got the best parents in the world! |
