Hi guys I have been away for about a mounth now assisting a wildlife photographer in the north of scotland but now i am back in Edinburgh and about to shoot a portrait session for the next 2 weeks for the RBS golf open my problem is I was checking all my equipment for this and though there is a light kit I have been told to use and bring my 580 speedlite but It does not want to flash?!?!? ahhhhh
The problem is the flash turns on and there is a high pitch sound so it is charging but it wont flash and some times it just turns off completely?
I dont use flash that much so I was wanting to know if there is a setting that I am not getting right do i give it time to charge etc
help much appreciated
Thanks guys Cowie |

"M" mode should still fire the flash unit unless he has it turned off. |

1. Fresh Batteries
2. Master or Off...either one is ok
3. Check that the flash is well seated in the camera hotshoe
4. Try firing the flash manually by pressing the red light button |

Most likely a battery problem...I have had exactly the same symptoms when the batteries are running down. |

I don't have a flash, but from battery experience with my P&S I'd suggest lithium batteries for that flash rather then regular. :-)

Hi-ho,
Dunno What batteries you're using, but get yourself some high capacticy NIMH's for the 580. It eats standard batteries at a frightening rate if you use it a lot.. (I use sanyo branded 2200MAh jobs..)
With standard dry cells, or even the chaper energisers you'll get fewer than 100 flashes from the 580 at average power levels, and with cheap dry cells you're sometimes lucky to get 30... |
