This was the entry I had in the desolation challenge which was a HUGE mistake. I had looked up "desolate" and one of the definitions was "uninhabited" which was why I entered it....

Even though it scored low because it DNMC I think its a good shot. Some of the comments I received said it needed more contrast and I agree, I just can't figure out how to get it right.

Anyone want to take a stab at making this photo pop?

Thanks

Here is my quick stab

I use cs2...so the edit steps were
highlight/shadow
neat image
dup layer and set mode to overlay
gothic glow (love that action)

Thats it. Problem now is that it looks even less desolate, and more like a painting.

Not sure what software you are using, if no photoshop...you could at least get more pop by playing with hue/sat and levels.

Maya

OK - did a second one...less painting like...I like this better

high pass
auto color
despeckle
hue sat
curves.

Here is my attempt. +20 to contrast and -5 to brightness.

I did a gradient mask on the bottom and another on the top. levels/curves on each

Taking it one step further...

+ 35 to red
+ 20 to green
- 20 yellow

Faye,
Where in Oregon did you take this photo?

Wow you guys are fast.. and good. I'm going to try some of these ideas. I've been mostly a Paint Shop Pro user but I need to learn more about Photoshop.

Lite desaturation to get rid of some of the blue
Curves - Anchor the mids and darks and work just the Highs to add some body to the clouds.

Noise is from a sharpen that I did, with the original (possibly why Rikki is asking) I would run it through NoiseNinja but at this size it would get too smooth.

Colyla, I took it about 15 miles from Roseburg on Callahan Mountain. Its on a narrow, steep, snakey road called the "Old Coos Bay Wagon Road" but well worth the drive. And you have to drive it on Sunday when there are no log trucks.

I drove up alone and it was scary because they target practice up there and there were gun casings all over the ground...

and I'm pretty sure I heard banjo music coming from around the bend... :)

You need a place to post it to on the internet so you can link it here.

It's a pretty plain shot. You have great tones in there and this is pretty much what I came up with. it was a quick job. i think this gives it a different story.
