For some odd reason I was browsing alfresco's portfolio and found this:
In the comments he mentions a bench fetish of sorts. I thought "How odd!" until I wandered through the few folders I have on my laptop. Appears I take a picture or two of benches as well - I never knew! So JP, these are for you, and congrats on that silly virtual ribbon you got... 'Bout damned time for that, don't you think? :-)

Any other bench shooters out there? Anyone know what causes this? |

Maybe because it's evocative of solitude, or loneliness...

So I hop and what's the first thread I click? Yep - 'Benched'! Thanks for bringing benches to the forefront Deb :)
Here's what I think
The empty bench: sit alone on one and you're virtually assured of having no one else join you - the epitome of solitude or, sadly, loneliness. Sit on an empty bench with another and you're virtually assured of having no one else join you - you're sharing time and space with only the other - the epitome of sharing and love and togetherness.
The observer makes the choice of which way to take the image, pushed in a direction by their hopes and desires and their outlook on life.
Would I share that view, that time, with another? Or keep it to myself?
So much potential, that bench.
I forgot to take my meds again :(

Yes, I've taken photos of a bench or two in my life.
And when I was travelling through Europe 22 years ago, whenever I found a postcard that had a barrel in it, I would send it to some friends back in Australia. Quite a few barrel postcards... |

GeneralE, you do realize that on "Sail Away", you've dated it 2008? :-) |

Really it's not just benches, I find that any man made structure in a larger landscape provides a good pocal point for a photo. Do you want to start a post on how many fence photos people have taken, or roads? |

Interesting also, my not-going-to-get-a-chance-to-shoot desolation image has a bench in it. |

Mine were shot outside the challenge, except the golf course one, and it's better suited to "Indulgence" than "Desolation".... but hey, if I find another bench around here somewhere... :-) |
