Just wanted to say hiya's to all the folks here. I've been looking for a digital photography related forum for me to visit...basically looking for experience and knowledge. I'm a relative rookie and recently purchased a Canon S45 as a up-grade from the little Kodak DX3500 I origionally had. My primary focus of interest is hobby related and I'm looking for help improving my photography skills in order to improve my hobby related photos.I am a moderator at a hobby related site and am looking forward to a positive experience here. By the way my hobby is reef aquariums and I have numerous pics available that ya'all can see in order to better understand my skill level and interests.

Any way...pleased to join ... and looking forward to learning from those of you willing to offer the time and effort to help a old rookie improve.

If I've got posting images correct here at this site you'll see a recent photo of one of my corals below...what ya think?

Welcome to DPChallenge, there are lots of opportunities to learn here. I'd recommend entering a few challenges and critiquing a few photos. Both of those have really helped me improve my skills.

In the shot above did you have autowhite balance turned on? If so try the flourescent white balance option if your camera has that.

Also here's a thread that might interest you:

Bobby

Welcome

I would like to see more of your photographs.

Taking photographs of the home or public aquarium can be very difficult especially using an autofocus lens, the autofocus wants to focus on the glass and not the subjest you are after. So trying to photograph the fish or coral can be very tough.

I breed and raise African Cichlids. My favorite being the Lake Malawi "Blue Dolphins". I have videos of them raising there young fry. Most female African cichlids as you may or may not know raise their fry for the first two - three weeks by carrying them in their mouths to protect them from preditors, releasing them only to eat and etc.

Loom forward to seeing more of your work and attempts at photographing your reef aquariums.

Thanks for the response so far. I agree that there are problems with the pic I posted...that is why I posted it. Many of the attempts at micro photography come out the same and I am looking for experience/knowledge to correct the problems.

In reference to your archieves on the topic I have read through many of them and there is indeed some very useful information. However...the subjects Iam attempting to capture digitally are contained inside a 55 gal aquarium that is illuminated with over 480 watts of intense light and a water turn over(circulation rate) of well over 15 times the tanks volume. Both create problems that I am trying to over come.

Many of the professional photographers suggest the lens right on the glass and flash...well I've tried that and it creates a whole new set of problems. The use of a flash distortes the color radically and anything that close to the glass scares the fish...and can even scare the coral!

Most of my shots to this point are taken in the auto mode with macro off and ISO on auto. No flash...I will look into use of the white balance as suggested....any other helpful information will be appreciated.

Below is yet another of my recent pictures .....comments...and more importantly suggestions would be appreciuated. Don't worry I have very thick skin...and my intention is to improve my abilities to photograph my aquariums for on-line use in a forum much like this one.

Just so you folks will see what my pictures look like and the diversity of the subjects here is another picture of primarily coral...again comments are appreciated...especially info on improving my attempts.

welcome S45 person. I would say that up against the glass is probably best, but why mess with the flash when you've got control of the environment you're shooting...
