Not a print, though I sold few of those too during this process, but I actually sold a license for someone to use one of my shots - got some serious money - at least serious to me.

Chicago GTG, May 6. I shot the following two images, along with hundreds of others that day:

The second one was a challenge shot for DPC Cinema, didn't do badly. Note the buildings illuminated with the "CPD" letters. Chicago was honoring police officers killed in the line of duty.

While shooting that evening from the museum campus near the Adler Planetarium, we were approached by a woman who asked if we were professionals (ha!). We said we were just amateurs having a day of shooting together. She introduced herself as the mother of a police officer killed ILD a few years ago, and said that the families stick pretty close together, so when the city buildings were lit up like they were this day, many come out and meet with other families and support each other, etc. She asked if she could see some of my shots, so I got an email address from her and offered to show her a few shots.

Next day, I emailed her the link to my Pbase account and never heard from her again. About a week later, I started to notice that the hits on my Pbase galleries were going through the roof (I normally average about 10 hits a day to a given image or gallery). I had 7 to 8 hundred hits for a few of my chicago shots. I also had a few comments left from Chicago PD people and others, interested in buying prints. I quickly made some prints available through DPCPrints and sold a few within days. I was then contacted (via comment and then email) by someone from a print shot in Chicago asking about buying the rights to one of the shots.

Long story shortened, the president of the company wanted to use one of my "CPD" images for a promotional piece that they would send to their clients as an example of what can be done with a quality digital camera shot and their print facilities. After some negotiation (assisted by advice from my DPC friends!), they offered me $500 for the use of the CPD Skyline II shot above. They also offered to send me a quantity of their 3'x5' prints (that's feet!) and smaller sizes if I wish. They're also going to donate a quantity of the prints to the CPD for their own use.

Needless to say, I'm flattered and humbled by this opportunity. I don't consider myself a pro by any stretch, but it's great to get some recognition (and cash!) for my hobby. Serious thanks to MayaM for organizing the GTG. Thanks Maya!

Gonna buy a wide angle - either Tok 12-24 or something else. Recommendations welcome! Drats that I can't use Canon's EF-S 10-22 on my 10D!

!!!!!!!!!!

That's fantastic John! I've got a night shot of Calgary and have heard much pleasant things about it where I've used it but it's not even close to the crispness of what you've done!
Good on ya!

I've heard that it's a great lens but I haven't been able to find out - for sure - if it works well on the EF mount cameras like my 10D, or if it's designed for the EF-S mounts like Rebel, 20D, etc.
