Hello Everyone,

I am fairly new to photography... at least digital. I shot in the yearbook in high school and etc. I would really like to make this a bit more than a hobby, possibly a part time job... or full in the future. My question is, how do I get started. I emailed a bunch of photographers around the area, but none have replied. I stated that I would VOLUNTEER to do anything, lighting and etc. just to learn how it worked. Nobody has gotten back to me. I work full time and I am getting my MBA.... so classes are not really practical. Any pros out there ... do you not like volunteers?

Somebody help !:)

I put something in our church newsletter and bulletin. Also took a few of my favorite shots around town and actually got some interest there. 3 shots in particular are wanted in rather large size for a restuarant.
I don't want anything big yet otherwise I'd put something in our paper- we live in a small rural community. We also have a friend who is a professional so I talk to him quite a bit. I have my first shoot with a prospective model tomorrow evening. That was a call back from our church newsletter and someone at our church had given this kids mom my phone number.
For me it's by word of mouth. By end of summer I'll probably have business cards made up and take them to the local shops around town. Don't know how that will go but like I said, i don't want it to go big. I want it to stay a hobby and stay enjoyable.

Good luck with your endeavor!

I would call the photographers and have a portfolio to show them. Ask to come in and show your work.

The other idea is instead of "volunteering" ask if they would do an internship for no pay. By saying internship you are telling them that you are serious about it. By volunteering it sounds like you want to learn, but may not show up if its nice out or what ever. Just like in business, the same quality work priced low and priced high, people think the higher priced one is better.

I would expect some one calling me to be able to show a portfolio to me. Some one in your position may not have a killer portfolio, but that is expected. A portfolio (printed) shows that you care about your work and are serious.

You may also want to call the photographers and ask to do an informational interview with them. Be ready with a list of questions to ask them. Think of it as an interview. It shows that you want to learn. This way they get to know your name and face if you can do it at their studio. Then you can ask about interning with them.

Remember in a pro studio time is money. If you are asked to be there, be there and be on time.
