Went out strolling this evening while the kids were in guitar practice... and this is what I came across. Critiques, suggestions?

I really like the placement of the three main subjects. The shooter, the ball and the basket. I think the shadow of the hoop on the wall adds something to the shot as well.
Even with the shadow though there's not enough 3D in this picture for my tastes. Maybe it's the wall in the background? Or the chain link gate?? I'm not quite sure but it feels like it lacks depth. I'm pretty much a beginner so I can't tell you how to actually get that depth...but if it's possible I think it would make this shot great. |

Thanks for the comment. The lack of 3D comes from being at 300mm zoom from about 50+ yards away. If I were to have come in about 20 yards and used less zoom the 3D would have been more present in the shot. Since I didn't know this person, I stood back and shot from the tree line :-)
Good eye to pick up on that detail!

Danny...I don't find the picture to be all that interesting, and in fact, despite the ball being up in the air, I find it rather static because the shooter himself is just standing and not in any interesting action pose. I also find the image lacking in contrast.
In addition, I find there is too much distraction in the photo as well, as my eyes travel from the ball to the light near it, to the chain link fence and the shadow. Perhaps a simpler shot with the basket, shooter and ball isolated would have made for more interest. |

That's a great crop. :)
And I actually like that the shooter is standing flat footed. |

This is a great illustration of that time proven rule of photography:
How do you make nearly any picture better? Take 3 steps forward.
(note to self: does not apply to stinging insect macro photography)

I like this crop... I don't think I have enough pixels to make that a print :-)
