How does everybody vote here? I was just wondering because I kind of have my own method when going through each picture.

First I decide wether or not the image fits the challenge. Sometimes I see great pcitures but tehy were taken without the challenge in mind. however since the are good pictures the submitter trys to find a way to apply the picture iwth a clever title. If It does meet the challenge then it starts with a five. From there I goto the creative aspects of the shot, as far as centering the object of focus or the dynamics of the image. Then I goto the actual technical qualities of the image. was it compsed right, is it in focus, was it overdone in PS, etc...

How does everyone else go about it? do you take an approach like me or just higher score the more you like it? I would be intrested to hear how everyone does this. Keep in mind I'am really busy so this process doesnt take me but a minute to go through, so dont think im have discussions on each image heh.

Searched for "How do you vote", and got nothing. I know I'm "new" , so I should have expected the sarcastic negative guy to post his useless thoughts. Good job!

The search option is not the greatest... I often have a hard time finding what I'm looking for. Here's one link to a voting methods thread. I know there are lots of others.

Honestly, first I look to see if the shot meets the challenge, then I vote on how much *I* like the picture. Screw technical correctness, if it's pleasing to look at there must be something right about it.

Even if the shot doesn't meet the challenge, if I like it I'll still give it a five, but leave a comment saying I would have voted it much higher but I didn't think it met the challenge. There was on in the candids challenge, that I put in my favorites, but it just looked too posed. IMHO, candid is supposed to be fairly spontaneous.

well, I'm new too and the way that I decided to vote is that a 5 is your average photo, and 10's are a super awesome photo and 2 is an uninteresting extremely boring, way out of focus picture that looks like it was taken with a disposable camera. After I rank the photos, I go back to the screen where it shows you from 10 to in my case 2 which photos you voted what, and I start moving them around in relation to the other photos in the challenge, so that they resemble an order of which ones I thought were the best to the least, sort of like ranking on a curve, instead of ranking in absolutes against all photos in the world. (in Something New III, my first and only challenge so far, I ended up with 3 10s, 26 9s and 34 3s, only 2 2s, and the rest of the 401 photos in between)

my bf, however, starts every photo with a 5 and then adjusts it according the best possible photo or the worst, and ends up with almost all his photos in 4,5, or 6.

also wanted to note that I like creativity and love it when people use their imagination for the photo, even if it needs to be explained by the title; of course, I feel that titles are very important, because some of the best art that's out there needs an explanation.

I also first look to see if I feel it meets the challange. If it does not then I start between a 3 and 5 and work down from there. After that it is mostly my eye that does the voting.

After I decide on a score, if the score is lower I look at the elements of the photo that made teh score so low. I try to put these in a comment. If I find I can't really find any elements to justify my eye's vote I will raise the score a couple points.

After I have finished going through all the photos I look at them all bunched together. And see how each one compares to other photos of the same score. I offten move photos up or down a point deciding if they should be grouped with the others in that score based on the challange or not.

One thing to note....in your profile it says what your average vote is. IMO everyones average should be between a 5 and a 6. For the reason being that if your average vote is too low or too high than you are not basing an average quality photo on the proper scale, but rather your scale. The average photo should be between a 5 and a 6 and thus your average vote should be between a 5 and a 6.

A few elements that I find to be particularly annoying:
HARSH SHADOWS as #1
Lack of scenery or background (ie kid shots in the backyard, birthday photos, etc)
Over/Under saturation
slight mergers with the subject

hope that helps understand my madness

Well, my profile says my average vote is 5.3, which I find to be odd because if I didn't participate in the challenge, I tend to give everyone 8 and above.... unless the picture is just really bad. I mean, somebody has to ballance out the trolls. But, in those challenges I almost never give less than a 5. I almost never give less than a 4 in any challenge, unless it's just really bad or offensive.
