I kind of like this semi candid shot of my son. but the hat blends into the background, and for the life of me I can't bring it with out using the dodge tool, which leaves an unsuitable image. How do I???????

Have you tried using the magic wand and playing with the tolerances to select only the background? That way you could select it and adjust the levels for that area only.

If the hat is "too dark" you may not be able to recover it. It may be "clipped".

You could mask him and brighten up the background ...

did a quick adjust.
brigthend the whole image with levels, then darkened the white, then dodged the white shirt, burned the white area on the hat and finally some selective color adjusts.
hope it helps...;P

I went to replace color, chose a slightly lighter background color, then increased the contrast to compensate for the lighter flatter pic. worked good enough for me. thanks all for the advice.

My work monitor isn't calibrated so I have no idea how off it is but shadow/highlights seemed to do an okay job on this photo.
