First, I would like to thank all â10â who ambitiously left comments!!! Thank you very much!!!!
My concerns are the 242 that did not comment! Why?
I was thinking maybe I only received â10â comments because I am less then a month old on DPC. Sounds logical, but I went to the Blue Ribbon winner, extremely deserving, âTransitâ. I looked at how many votes and comments he received. Well, this fine photographer has been on here since 2002, almost 4 years. He has other great photographs and one would think very well known on here. He received 260 votes and only, 31 comments!!! Again, I ask, why? Why so few?
I entered this âChallengeâ to test DPC. I wanted to see how dedicated the people are on here to photography. I wanted to see how helpful they would be to help others not so gifted. Donât get me wrong, there are tons of talented photographers on here!!! But the question still stands, why are they on here? Ones first thought is self gratification as in seeing their work on the web and comparing it to others and obtaining ideas for self improvement. Then you have others, which I have had experience with on here already, who think their few years experience in any photography and their expensive digital equipment, take a âsnap shotâ and think, their work great, and is very nasty when you make the slightest comments to help them. When given with knowledge and honesty, comments, one would think, help improve a photographer who is looking to improve their work so they can obtain the goals they would like to reach, like being as talented as the so many on DPC.
I would like to see DPC require comments with âChallengesâ. Not doing so is like giving a child a grade and not explaining why they deserved that grade. It can only help one to get better!!
Please note; My composition has many flaws, and I know that. I was shocked it finished as high as it did. I was looking for knowledgeable input, not ranking.
I am hoping DPC is interested in helping others learn. This is a small request that can have large benefits to all!! I have 30+ years in most all aspects of photography, and I am still learning! Iâm here to, more then anything, help!! Thank you to all!!

i'd suggest browsing the forums to see how much this has been bandied about in the past. it's a lot more involved than just whether or not the members are 'committed to photography'...
here are some threads to help you get started...

it's kinda hard to comment on all let alone vote on all the images! I think if we were forced to comment we'd get a lot less votes. Also it has been said (as pointed before) comments like good shot could be left & what does that help? If you want a critique you can always ask in the forums too :0) |

You should also realize that the period of time which youve been at DPC does not affect how many comments you get at all because the challenge entries are anonymous. Nobody knows who took what. You should also remember that not everyone has the time to comment on hundreds of images every week.

Requiring comments would have two predictable results -- 1) there would be a lot less votes cast; and 2) there would be an increase in the number of attaboy comments, like "great shot". Both are negatives in my mind.
How long you have been a user here has nothing to do with how many comments your entries receive.
You need to keep an open mind and hang around for a while longer to see how things work. It is a great site for learning, and a supportive community. With your 30 years experience you should be able to contribute a lot for those of us who are relative, and actual, beginners.

Some people are very happy with their work and do not want comments, and some are here to learn. I think there should be a box to check that says whether or not you want comments. When I am voting and I see a photo that I think could be improved, I ask myself if this is by one of the people begging for comments or will I be considered uneducated and my comment not appreciated. I have cut way back on my comments lately, but if there was a box saying "I want comments" I would give my opinion. (If this is ever available when entering challenges, I would hope any saying they want comments would not complain about constructive criticism.)

I would like to comment on your comments about receiving few comments but I really have no comment. :)
As skip said, search the forums for all the threads discussing comments and read through all of them and report back in 5 weeks when you are finished. ;-) |

How "dedicated" the site is to "helping others learn" would be better judged by observing forum activity closely than by reducing it to a mathematical ratio like "comments received". Comments are not always graciously received, while requests for help in the forums are usually a good signal that the photographer is open to "instruction". It takes tiem and commitment to make a useful comment, and many reserve the effort for situations where they know it will be well-received.

"challenge entries are anonymous" is the way it is supposed to be. I have been told, many message one another telling what their images are and vote favorably towards their friends.
I thought I read that the founders of DPC wanted this website to be a learning experience. Not a "copy cat" website. All I am asking is a little more effort be given Challanges for all. The first few responses so far say it would be to much work, but are missing the point at making a change to the voting criteria to keep it simple. I guess it is a lot easier to look, make your required amout of picks so your vote counts and leave. I guess that is ok for ones who like their life easy.
I am sorry if I asking to much to help others excell. |

Thank you chaimelle for the idea!!! If the box is checked, they are wanting to learn. If a comment is given, insure it is done in a caring manner. I have seen comments that are down right nasty. Thats not helpful.
chaimelle, again, thank you for your comment and help!! |

Yeah, voting can take enough time by itself without having to leave a comment for every picture. Often it comes down to whether or not *I* like the picture, not the technical correctness of it (like I would know anyway).
Although, I'm adopting Thegrandwazoo's policy of: If I didn't participate in the challenge, then 10's for everybody! Woo!!! Somebody's gotta ballance out the trolls! |

Better yet, if an image is scored 4 and below, how about asking for a bit of advice as to why it deserved such a score? I agree with most that commenting is time consuming. I think it's the images that get the votes of 4 or less that need the most comments. However, this would also be great for those "trolls" that vote a particularly good image a low score in the hopes that their image would score higher. Ha! Who are you trying to fool? Denial and self esteem. A couple of words these folks need to think about ;) |

Sorry - but that's BS! The general population here are here to have fun. Ribbon winners get more comments because their shots are better. Period! They do not message all 400+ voters in each challenge and request a personal review/comment. The TRULY good shots will always get more comments than middle-of-the-road shots and you cannot make

i think that people comment on photos that stick out at them because of how good, bad, or emotional they are. another reason they comment may be because of a technical pet peeve or curiosity.
so i guess if you want comments then take a great or terrible photo haha
as for why people are here... trolls?... learning?... art?... fun?
i find that there are all diffent kinds of members who are as diverse as the photos. you will never agree with everyone. everyone has a diffent voting style too and i think it's more authentic that way
not everyone will get or like what you do
i like the idea of a box you can check that says you would like comments but wouldnt everyone check it?

It's already suggested in the voting rules that you comment on any photo you rate 3 or lower. But the forums are also full of threads from photographers complaining about those comments, and from commenters complaining they've received a nasty PM responding to the comment.
Until photographers demonstrate the ability and grace to "hear" a negative comment about their precious entry, then commenters will be rightfully hesitant to offer either advice or condolences ...
Everyone "says" they want to hear why someone rated their image so low, but not many act like it when someone takes them up on the offer.
It's too bad, because a true discussion of some of the lower-rated entries would be beneficial to the site as a whole. It's interesting how some people can totally "get" an image, while many more skim over it, seemingly without a clue. I'm an expert at this kind of entry (if any of you didn't already know); my favorite comment this year is:

We all are here to have funn ,but in the end of day you dont have to rubb it in that ones are better and others not .And we all are here for the same reason! photography! with or without comments ! This place is for learning right ? Help ? Advice ! Not to be told that some are better than other ! Yes voting 400 images or so it could be a chore ,but still 1,2,3 es could do with word or two .Thanks .

Sure, getting comments along with low scores would be nice, however, I'd much rather have an inspired comment than a forced one. |
