I'm totally in the dark and new to this, and I've got a few questions for the experienced out there. And yes, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but the forum search being what the forum search is, it wasn't too forthcoming with results. So any insight would be greatly appreciated.

-Copyright: when posting pics on a site, should there be a copyright on them? Something like "(C) MY NAME" in one corner? Or does this come off as un-professional? I've looked at several of teh SC's sites, and they don't seem to do it, but I've heard it the other way too, and am a bit confused.

-Low res: I've heard that images should be low res on a site, to make it harder for people to use them...verdict on this? What counts as "low-res"?

-Opinions on using a site that handles sales and takes a commission, or to get the request, order sales yourself through another source and send them yourself?

-How do you promote such a thing? Just paste the hyperlink anywhere you can?

-Finally (for the moment), I have a place or two in mind, but any reccomendations are welcome.

Thank you already to anyone who has gotten this far :)

I kept my site simple and used a flash viewer to display my pics.. i try to keep them clean but low res so its impossible to steal them. I have just started learning how to do this kind of thing and find that the easiest way to do it these days is to use the TOOLS provided by the server for making a site. I am learning dreamweaver but its an uphill walk for an old man like me.

MY SITE

It is deliberately simple and 'boring'? but thats exactly what i wanted and the fact I suck at coding too.

The server usually provides the tools in user freindly style so anyone can create a basic site, if you want something a bit more classy then use TEMPLATES that are available on the WWW everywhere.

Brent, I teach courses in Web Design & Development at a University here in Arizona and would be more than willing to try and answer these and any other questions you might have. If I can't answer them, I can certainly point you in the right direction. PM me if you want.

One of my all time favorite photography sites/galleries is South Africa - Photos by Daniela Börner - also in Flash. Having been raised in South Africa the pictures are captivating, but I also enjoy her specific Web layout and design too.

I agree with Marac too - Flash is one way to protect your work. It doesn't stop folks from taking screen shots of your work, but at least they will be low res.

I have been thinking about possibly offering my services in the form of a tutorial for those interested in building a photography Web site. Just wasn't sure what the interest would be since the majority of tutorials are more technique and editing related - and rightly so!

Edit to add: I understand that there are many wonderful free sites out there that allow photographers to display galleries of their work. This post was geared more toward folks wanting their work displayed under their own domain name.

That sounds like a great idea. I was just looking at the possibility of this today. Isn't there something in Photoshop that helps set up a web gallery ?

hi,
i did all by myself ... if you need help just ask,
you can get the ideas while lurking around other web galleries but at the end you have to come up with your idea or you never be satisfied
:>
/ the copyright should be mentioned at home/index page
/ there is no need to go obver 800px max for width of photos/images
/ how to promote ? yes show the url anywhere you can but not too much, people can get annoyed :>
/ for selling i'm not at home with that

My dad, brother, and I are in the process of setting up a site and so are going through some of the same issues/questions posted here. So far my dad has been doing all of the site creation work.

As models for what ours will be like, he used ideas from a couple of my favorite sites:

Mountain Light Gallery (Galen Rowell - amazing outdoor adventure shots, #AA1110 from the Eastern Sierra section is on my living room wall! If you are ever in Bishop, Ca. don't miss going to the gallery!)

Regis Lefebure (Regis has incredible stuff, particularly of auto racing. He has done work for a number of large companies and organizations, in fact his shot of an Audi race car was on the box for one of the Canon printers)

Wow, thank you all for your replies!

Well, I've taken the next step. I started playing around on ClickImage.com to set up a site, but it's driving me mad. Now I don't know code and such, but I'm pretty darn computer savvy, and I can't figure some of thier stuff out, and am not so sure I'm crazy about them.

At this point in the game, I'm still a broke college student, so I want to stick with one of the free hosting sites. Can anyone reccommend something in addition to ClickImage? Or even warn me away from a bad one?

The samples linked are wonderful, and looking at them, I can already see things I like and things I don't. I suspect that gooc is right, and in the end, I won't be really happy until I make my own - but that will have to wait.

And jimpearce, thanks for your offer. As I run across more specific questions on design, I may PM you. For what it's worth, I think a tutorial would be very helpful, even if it just covered some basics. I get the sense that there's a lot of folks here who are wondering about this, but are like me and don't really know anything about doing it.

Here's yet another element that I'd love some insight into. Business names. I could of course name it after myself, but that's sorta'...bland. "Brent Pennington Photography" is a mouthful.

So here's the question: What do you need to worry about when picking a name? If I wanted to market myself as "Odyssey Photography", say (using my username as an example), and that was going to appear on my business cards, website, etc, do I need to worry about whether or not a "Odyssey Photography" already exists somewhere?

Knowing nothing, I tend to think that would be a concern...but then, I've seen businesses before with overlapping/very similar names, so I don't know.

And once a name is picked, would I have to register it somehow, or do I just get to use it?

*sigh* This is all becoming more complicated than I expected...

Here are a couple I like:

Marco Illescas which uses a flash component that I'm playing around with for my Boy Scout website.

and one of our locals:

Silvestro Rugolo

A good website is more than good flash and your design. JimPearce? (sorry forgot the name) could tell you that submissions to search engines isn't going to get you where you want to go, nor will posting a URL wherever.

Having good Meta tags in the header will get Google robots to "see" your site and if you change something on your site regularly, the bots know it and your site will catch on that way. Good Keywords in your Meta tags is a big key.

Links and link backs also are a biggie.

Whew. Sorry. I am a newbie here to learn about shooting and already I am off on a tangent.
