| Am I allowed to add a sepia filter to a picture in a basic editing challenge? I noticed that the duo tone challenge was basic editing and allowed it. I wanted to be sure before entering a photo. |

| Basic editing does not allow layers, spot editing and a few other things. You can convert to duotone/sepia as long as you don't use another layer (except for adjustment layers in PS), and whatever you do is done to the entire image and not parts of it. |

In other words Yes it is legal, as it is applied to the whole image!

If you're using Photoshop...A simple way to achieve the effect "legally" in basic editing is to create a Hue/Saturation layer and check the "colorize" box...make your adjustments by shifting the sliders. Since Hue/Sat is a non-pixel containing layer (an "adjustment" layer) you will be well within the editing guidelines.
