Last week i got a canon 1.5X teleconverter lens for my S2 and i used it all weekend about 1/2 the time the autofocus would hit go green and i could take a decent image.
So today i got in a cheapie 1.6X teleconverter and ive used it like 15 minutes now and this lens hits eveytime i click it. What i mean by hits is the lens will focus and the box goes green to take the shot.
I paid $5. for the cheapie and like $50. for the 1.5 canon lens. Is it my camera needs a 1.6X and the 1.5X is just not the right shape or somthing?
Look at these images.
Canon 1.5X
And this is the cheapie 1.6X
This is confusing me |

while doing closeups try to use manual focusing if it's possible on your camera.
it seems that the 1.5 picture is just out of focus...

Its not a closeup, thats a telephoto in the max zoom. Its actualy about 10 feet away.
Ive tried manual focus but i cant seem to get the image any better then the auto focus. I know what your saying about the image looks out of focus though. It seems ok in the center but the edges seems out of focus thats what i dont understand. I have a 2.0X that is almost the same as the 1.5 it seems ok in the center but the edges are very poor and i thought thats why the lenses were cheap. When i got the canon it was a little better but not much then i thought this is just the nature of converter lenses. When i got this 1.6 it looks good im shocked how good it looks but now im confused. I would tend to think the canon would be better then this one but its not.

Adding glass elements can never be good, especially on a point and shoot.. if the zoom range on the camera doesn't satisfy you, maybe it would be good to save up for an SLR? Although then you get into BIG lenses if you want more reach. |

But i dont know what im doing now, how will an SLR help?
I think i should learn cameras before i jump into a $1k SLR camera.
I just put out $500. on the setup i have now.
Its not that im not satisfied, the camera has some upgradeability and since im having fun with cameras i thought i would buy some stuff for it to change around. Filters, lenses, seperate flash
I was curious about the converters so i got a few |

What is your shutter speed? With a 10x zoom lens plus a teleconverter, you should be pushing 400+mm....at that magnification, any little shakiness on your part will really affect the image. Your shutter speed would need to be pretty fast to negate that. I'd suggest trying your test shots again on a tripod (if you didn't the first time).

It looks like camera movement more than a focusing problem like Maverick said before. Use a tripod for sure. |

They are both the same speed, focus, everything. The camera has IS and it was in auto mode. Ill use a tripod but i dont think it will help.
Why does one look good and one doesnt with the same exact settings?
Right click the image and look at the image info. |

Ok i used a tripod and tried all three of my teleconverters.
First is a cheap crystal optics 2X from e-bay, second is the canon 1.5X then the last is the no name brand 1.6X all on auto, with flash 2 second timmer on a tripod.
