Looking for a good quality rucksack but bewildered by the choice. I have a heavy pro camera, 1 large zoom, 3 mdium sized lenses, 550 ex flash unit and manfroto tripod. Can any one suggest pros and cons of various models
thanx in advance

I carry pretty much everything you mentioned and opted for a Lowepro "Mini Trekker AW".
In this I fit the following:
Canon 5D w/battery grip
Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8L
Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro
Canon EF 50 f/1.8 II
Canon EF 1.4EX II extender
Canon Speedlite 580EX
Canon Speedlite 420EX
Canon ST-E2 Speedlite transmitter
Various filters
2 chargers (for flash and camera)
And my Manfrotto tripod
The bag isn't too big and I bring it in aircraft all the time as hand luggage (hopefully they'll never weigh it!).

I'd go for the Mini Trekker too. It's a decent size (I can fit two bodies in there, and a few lenses and other bits and pieces) without being too large - plus the tripod mounts vertically on the centre of the pack, which is important for heavy tripods like Manfrottos. The next bag down, the Mini Trekker 200, has tripod straps underneath the bag, and it was impossible to balance the tripod well because the head is so much heavier than the foot end.
Lowepro has a deservedly good reputation, the bags are much better than the cheapies.

My boy'f got a lowepro dryzone bag and he's v pleased with it. tonnes of space, and compartments to fit things snugly... as well as a handy place to put a tripod, a drink bag with long straw mouthpiece and a fully waterproof compartment - just in case you want to go hiking on the side of a mountain in the rain! :-D

another endorsement for the mini trekker. I love mine. One of the complaints I kept reading about backpacks is that it's hard to easily get your camera out of them, but with the way the zippers meet at the top, I have no problems slipping the back down one arm, and grabbing the camera out the top, if that makes any sense. I only have a 20D, a 28-80 lense and a 70-200 lense, plus flash and fliters and stuff. There is still more room in the bag for other stuff. |
