Hi there, we just recently purchased a new Nikon Quantaray 500mm lens and we can't seem to get it to focus properly. (It didnt come with an instruction manual) When a photo is taken and then opened (we shoot in NEF format, or RAW format if you prefer) at 30-33% the picture looks fine, however if zoomed in to 100% the picture is so fuzzy and grainy theres really nothing we can do with it. We've tried contacting the person with whom we had purchased this lens from, but they will not get back to us. Soooo, here we are looking for help in other places.
Can someone out there help?
Thanks! |

I hate to break it to you, but the problem is probably that it is a Quantaray lens. Is it still returnable? I'm one broke mutha chunka, but I won't even look at Quantaray lenses... |

Whats wrong w/a quantaray? I work for my mothers photo business (- //www.miragephotoworks.com shameless plug lol -) so I know bits and pieces of whats good and whats not so great...
Thanks for all the help so far.
I think she tried our small tripod and the camera was too heavy for it, not sure if she tried the large one yet. :) |

I've never been in a camera shop outside of Ritz that actually had Quantaray lenses on the shelf. Ritz doesn't have Canon lenses half the time. That says everything to me...

Quantaray is only sold at Ritz and Wolf Camera because it's their "house" brand. In reality Quataray is made my Sigma though. It's budget glass but certainly far from useless.
To the OP - definately try a stirdier tripod maybe with a sandbag or 2 on the legs to really get it stable. Remember the more you zoom the more exagerated the camera shake will appear even at higher shutter speeds. |

Just a note to us people who can't afford 2.8 Nikon lenses...most of the 500mm lenses will get mostly negative reviews from photographers who can afford the BIG boys of Glass...but for us who can't, 500mm lenses can be used to satisfaction...one thing to keep in mind...first and foremost, as has been noted previously...a tripod is a must...secondly...you need a lot of light to make good pictures with these lenses...they are after all mostly F:8's...i have even hand held these puppies with my Fuji S1 and had excellent results...but results are in the eye of the beholder...i have used most all of them...Quantaray was actually very good, but hard to focus due to being VERY sensitive on the barrel, Sigma...not that great, Soligor, the older all metal version simply ROCKS, spiratone also has a great version.I am awaiting a Tamron SP to see how it compares. So fear not...these affordable lenses can be used by us amateurs and produce results that can be very acceptable...but please use a tripod. |
