Sorry, had to primal scream. I was asked to take some shots at our church's Vacation Bible School (for free - I am not good enough to charge, or mean enough to charge the church). "Some" turned into 300 over 4 days. They posted 28 to their website... and the ones they picked stink. My fault, I got rushed, and submitted them ALL of the shots I took. I thought they might be a bit more selective. Really, I did take better shots than this. Please feel free to peruse the wreckage here. Comments are welcome and encouraged.
(Keep in mind that these are all raw shots - I thought I would have time to process but they wanted the pictures before I knew it)

Not bad, all things considered. They might not be the most wonderful things "photographically speaking" but consider what the church wanted: 1) Images where people could be clearly seen
2) Images where the action and/or emotion was evident. The best lighting conditions/dof/whatever else wasn't nescessarily the most important thing to them.
Besides, you did a good deed, and that counts for something.

hmmmm, i think these are great shots... and THEY picked them right? so they must like them as well..
take it easy on yourself would ya? |

I agree with Randy (r1107). They are all decent shots, and many are really super. With a little cropping here, a little dodging and burning there, a lot more will be super. But very nice, raw stuff! I think you really show the personality of this group well. Congrats!

| they don't look too bad. You should save the ones they used off the website and touch them up for them, that way you don't feel to bad about the low quality of your work that is presented. You should also be given credit, esp. since you did this as charity work. |

| MarkRob, those are great shots, much better then any snapshooter would take, you should be proud of them. |

MarkRob, the frustration you are feeling is only the beginning if you are considering turning pro. Some clients can be easy, but most need things in a rush. I sacrificed my lunch hour today to shoot four headshots which are going on a huge banner by next Friday. The cost to the customer for the inconvenience? One hundred bucks for forty minutes of my time.
It looks to me like you did pretty well with the time you had to work with.
Practice, get good, call the shots, get paid. And if the customer is happy with your work you did your job as a photographer.

Thanks all, for the comments. I have come back up from where I was after reading all of them. I looked back at the collection I took and still look forward to getting some reaction from you guys sooner or later, but in the meantime, thanks for what you have given!
