All-
I already own a Nikon D70 and a Nikon Coolpix 4300, but the later (coolpix) doesn't seem to be working properly anymore...the battery dies fairly quickly and the photographs are coming out extremely blurry and pixelated. I know there are a million reasons this could be happening...but I'm almost at the point where I want to buy a new digital. I'm not looking for an SLR (I already own one)- but I am looking for one that I can take out casually (ie: hanging out with friends, doing to DisneyWorld on vacation etc...) Since I spent so much time researching SLR's, I'm completely out of touch with regular digitals! I like Nikon, but I like Canon too...can someone point me in the right direction and let me know what you do/ don't like (reasonably priced)...THANKS!!

I would pick up something that is compatible, in terms of memory cards.
That is honestly, the only major consideration that I would make. After sitting down with a list of 'compatible' cameras, I would go from there.
Saving money, by only having to buy one size memory card once, when you only intend on using one or the other camera while out shooting is, to me, a wise thing to consider. |

I already have a 1gb and a 512mb card...I think they can both be used for either camera I already own...I didn't know memory cards were specific to cameras....

Are your cards CF? Many P&S cameras are using SD cards, not CF. Some Fujis take CF but most use Xd: Oly's use Xd as well. It's best to check the type of memory a camera takes so that your current memory is compatible, as suggested.

Yeah, I would check storage card compatability over at dpreview.com and then think about whether you want it to be something you can slip in your pocket, something just a little smaller than a DSLR....those kinds of things. I've got a couple friends who take some nice snapshots with a Canon A80 or A85...can't remember which. It's very small and easy to carry...would fit in most pockets and any purse. I've got an older Sony P&S which is too big for pocketes, but I love it anyways!
I think size and features/settings might be the first couple of things to look at. Do you want it to have manual settings? Or are priority settings good enough? |

Yea, my girlfriend has the A85, it's a great P&S. It has all the manual functions of a SLR like, AV, TV and M and well as ISO and Metering modes. |

I'd like some zoom capabilities and manual settings...my memory cards are fine to use with any camera (I checked!)

Of course they are, as long as that particular camera also uses CF cards. If the camera uses SD cards, then you can't use the CF Cards you own in them. |

The D70 uses CF type cards, but all the new smaller P&S cameras by Nikon use SD type cards, so you're probably going to have to turn away from Nikon (gasp!) for your next P&S.
The Canon PowerShot A95, 5.0 Megapixel, 3x Optical/4.1x Digital Zoom, Digital Camera uses CF cards though.

I flipped coins and bought a Sony Cyber-shot W-5 one of Steve's best of (approx. $300.)- takes a Sony Memory Stick; f2.8 lens; shoots jpegs (no raw) nice movies too. Has some convenient manual settings or full auto; about average 2.5 lcd; optical viewfinder; very decent grip; accepts optional add on wide and tel lens. Made my christmas card with it. |
