Apparently the result of transgenic research using jellyfish and pigs. Suppose they had used octopus instead of jellyfish: Eight legged pigs? Holy hamhocks! |

How about pigs with suckers on their legs...or pigs that squirted ink...or an amphibious pig... |

To help scientists in cellular research. Those absent-minded scientists kept misplacing their pigs, and it was easier to make them flourescent than transplant radio beepers. |

Because swine are such a close genetic match to humans that their tissue reactions have a very high likelihood of corresponding to human tissue reactions. |

this was a more practical use of the concept:

And yeah, if you read the article they *do* have a practical application :-p

Am I missing something here? You're all poking fun at this, does that mean it is a hoax?
Here I was, getting all excited about the possibilities for the future :-( |

Nope, I don't think the glowing pigs are a hoax. Same technique that was used for the glowing, trangenic fish a while back. The real value of them, though, is what the success of ddoing it means for research... I doubt anyone will find a use for glowing livestock, but I've been wrong before!

Yes, that is what I was excited about, too, even though it could be handy if our dogs and cats glowed in the dark so we don't trip over them at night. |

If I glowed in the dark, I could be my own night light. Hopefully my glow would be bright enought that I could see the cat puke before I step in it with my bare feet.

So are we going to get
glow in the dark hams
glow in the dark sausages
and such in the near future?
will our excrement glow in the dark after eating them?
questions, questions! :p |
