I am hoping someone can help me find out why my image degrades when I upload it... I do use the space saver mode when I upload to Dpc........ One of the questions I have is that I am shooting at the large/fine format which is the highest resolution jpeg format for my Canon 20D.. and when I look at the information attached to the file or bring the image up in photoshop, it states the image is at 72 dpi resolution.. is this the resolution the image should be at... I can change the resolution in photoshop (without resampling). Should I be changing the resolution to higher (like 267) before I upload it to my portfolio? It really bugs me that my images in my portfolia look like a bad scan.. any help will be appreciated ... Maggie |

You need to sharpen for web it seems.
//www.dpchallenge.com/tutorial.php?TUTORIAL_ID=26
//www.dpchallenge.com/tutorial.php?TUTORIAL_ID=4
Read those, but all you have to do is, open the resized and saved for web file, and then do some USM on it generally.
Remember, sharpening before resizing to 640xXXX will cause image artifacts.

ALso, looking at your front page images on your profile, the could use some contrast and saturations adjustments. Just a thought.

mine save at 72dpi also unless I change them. 72 dpi should not be the reason for the degredation of your photos when uploaded. It could be the manner in which you save them for the web that's degrading them.
What editing software to you use? All of the photos in my portfolio are at 72 dpi

oops, meant to mention that, thanks dude.
Yeah, dpi and ppi only really matter in printing, monitors generally can't display above 72dpi.
If you want, I'll mess around with some of your stuff and post them up. I'm bored today. ;O)

Thanks so much Wavelength... Bear_music thought my pics are scans and it's a good thing he said that because I dind't know they were degrading.... sure, play away with them but if I can figure out how to upload them properly, then it would be easier. |

If you are uplloading the full-sized image to your portfolio space, then I believe the site is re-sizing it for your for display.
Better that you should resize it yourself to DPC-entry size yourself as others have suggested, so you can control image quality. |

As a test, try sharpening the image just a tad bit before submitting. I don't use save for the web...it's only function is to adjust color for the web as I understand it. No difference in 72dpi or 96 dpi when uploading images at a 640X480 resolution. I believe that only comes into play when enlarging images for print. |

actually, save for web deletes the EXIF info so that you can better controll the file size also.

Don't worry... you could spend all your time reading tutorials and forum posts and not taking pictures if you thought like that all the time.
We are all here to learn. Doing and trying things is the best way to learn. Asking questions as they arise is the second best method. :)

Okay, here's what I had time to do so far (stinking boss keeps walking over)
Original
Edited
I punched up the yellows, and 2 sections of cyan's, and slid the darks to teh center a bit on levels. Light USM, have to be careful with small versions ;O)

thanks for the compliment, but this really was pretty basic as PS goes, it's pretty easy to learn once you know what all the tools do. This was just two of them, Levels (you could use curves also) and Hue/Saturation. I did use a more advance feature of hue/sat with the color picker.
Next you'll get into layers, and kiss a week of your life goodbye, and a happy one at that. ;O)

Thanks so much for the question! Today was my first day out with a 20D and I'm used to uploading at 300 dpi. Such confusion! Looks like I came to the right forum. You guys rock!
