A friend of mine has a Nikor AF 75-300 1:4.5 - 5.6 lens, and he's wondering if this lens is compatible with a Nikon D100. He's using it with a 35mm Nikon.
Can someone from the Nikon community give us a light?

Well, basically all of Nikons Nikkor's fit Nikon Camera's (digital or 35,) its just that the newer lenses for the digital cameras have CPU's inside them that communicate with the newer camera. The AF may not work on the D100. Why not just try? |

The lens with work fine with his D100. All Nikon lens are compatible with the new cameras. The new lens, DX, cannot be used with film very well as you will black corners in all of your film photos. |

Yeah...the Nikon mount is pretty universal, it's just a matter of functionality. Some of the older or cheaper lenses don't have the CPU connection in them, which for the most part allows the camera to know what the lens is doing. In my experience (we just acquired an old Nikon E series lens that we've been playing around with on the D70) that mostly effects things like flash metering and stuff. Not sure which lens that is specifically, but if nothing else, the basic functions should work (manual focus...). |

one more answer ..
yes all AF lenses will work on the D100
old Nikon lenses, very old MF also known as NOT AI will damage modern Nikon cameras & must be modified (AI'ed , involves milling out a chunk of metal) - i am not sure of the dates but around 1970-75 they came out with AI lenses - so any Nikkor mfg in the last 30 years is 'good' to attach ...

Except for the Pre-AI lenses manufactured before 1977 and some of the first auto-focus lenses made for Nikon F3AF, all other Nikon F-mount lenses can be used on the digital bodies. However, with some lenses, certain features, such as auto-focus, matrix metering or TTL flash metering, will not be available. In any case, one should always check the lens compatibility charts found in camera manuals before mounting an old lens. |
