Hey folks. I have a shot from my friend's wedding that I would really like to turn into a black & white or sepia to frame for him. I'm having a hard time getting a good contrast out of it though. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. Tom

hi tom,
such a great pose! no wonder you want to play with this photo...
have you tried adjusting the levels and curves in the pic yet? that can help enhance the contrast and brighten the image a bit. also, instead of doing a b&w by taking down the general saturation in the hue/contrast section, have you tried adjusting the individual color channels to help accentuate the things you want to pop out of the picture before converting to b&w? (i'm leaning towards b&w over sepia, but play with them and see which one you like best!)
i think the shot of them is lovely. i'd love to see just a little cropping to deaccentuate the background and make the happy couple a bit more prominent.
i'd love to see the shot after your editing! hope you post it here, too.

Something like this?

(not cropped)

First thing to do after opening in PS, was to go to Image, Adjustments, Levels, then looking at the histogram, you will see 3 pointers under the graph. Notice the white (right side) is off on it's own with nothing in the graph above it. Slide it over to the very beginning of the black histogram on the right side (about 184 in input levels - top right box). Big change huh? Next slide the neutral (grey one) in the middle over to the left (approx. 1.32 in the input levels - top middle box).
About now, you should have a very nice level and something to work with.
I have the full sized pic I posted if you want it - just PM me with an email address.

This might sound crazy, but do you have Picasa2. If not, give it a try. This program seems to work really well a doing minor fixes, like fill in lighting and contrast. This photo looks like it could use alittle of both. Plus it has black & white, sepia and filtered black & white which works great. Good luck..

This was a super quick job just using Picasa2.
