Okay, a friend just referred me to this website. It sounded cool, so I signed up after browsing it for a few minutes. I chose the free membership for now. Then, I selected a challenge, making sure that it was one that general members could do (not an "exclusive" one). I chose "Celebration" as the topic.

After a couple of hours of photography, I have a semi-decent photo. I try to submit my entry... and all I get is a screen telling me about the benefits of membership, with no apparent way to continue on to submission.

Did I choose the wrong challenge somehow? Looking back over the challenges, the only options available are "Member Challenge" and "Exclusive Open Challenge". Is there a new definition of "Exclusive" that I missed, somehow?

Thanks for the help.

You signed up as a registered user and not as a member. The Celebration challenge is exclusively for members only. :)

You can enter only the "Open" challenges.

You're lucky, there used to be only 1 Open challenge per week,
now they are testing it with having 2 :)
so have fun submitting for EITHER Pride or the other one.
You can only submit for ONE of them per week.

The "member" challenges are for paying members only.

I can see how Exclusive could be confusing. It just means you have to pick one, and only one, of the two open challenges. So you can do either pride or (man they really should have had "prejudice" be the other challenge) or...personification.

Entries are due by 11:59pm eastern time on tuesday night at which point this weeks winners (those already in voting) are announced, this weeks entries (pride, personification) go to voting, and next week's challenges are revealed.

Ah, so the "exclusive" challenges are open to regular members, and "member" challenges exclude everyone except paying members. I'll try to remember that.

Anyway, I won't be using my photo I guess. It's here: //www.wadhome.org/celebration.jpg

I'm a brand new photographer, taking a class on the subject so I don't look like an idiot with a fancy camera. :)

Conceptually, it's an ok idea for a celebration. But execution wise it would have gotten a five from me. The skew is evident, the lighting choice isn't working, the chocolates look unappetizing.

I think for DPC, it's got to be more of a product shot. You know, stock photo...

I'd try it again but do a custom white balance under that lighting and see if that improves it.

Dude! That is a gorgeous picture! What an awesome idea. I couldn't think of anything myself for that challenge.

Chocolate is indeed a wonderful thing.

The only thing I would have been able to say about the pic was that I wish you hadn't included the wrapper. The lines on the chocolate make it very appealing, but the wrapper has a bit of convenience store feel to it. Not the end of the world of course.

Your lighting is awesome and your use of depth of field is great as well. The only thing I would suggest to do to that particular shot would be to crop the front edge of the tub off, it is a little crooked (not fixable because your tiles are straight) and it would probably be better with the eye moving directly to the chocolate rather than the bathroom tiles in the foreground.

I can't wait to see what you have in store for your next submissions!

Edit: I see that others have mentioned that they didn't like it for the same reasons that I said I did. Your call in the end. Some people think that because they would have voted a picture down because it doesn't match a particular style, everyone else would have too.

I can't really say, but it's a great picture and pictures do NOT have to be stock photography to win here. Nor is winning the only worthwhile objective.

I would have given the pic an 8 or 9 if you had cropped the front edge off.

Thanks for the comments!

Yeah, I tried all the different white balance settings on my camera, but none of them worked very well. Either it was too dim and you couldn't see the chocolate, or it was too bright and cold. I wanted it to be warm looking (nobody like to get in a cold bath!). I had the advantage that the light in the bathroom is on a dimmer, so I could adjust as needed.

Maybe I should have tried a flash with a fast shutter, to illuminate just the chocolate but let the candle do its thing?

I agree about the extra candy bars. They detract. Also about cropping the front.

The only editing I did of this photo was to resize it.

Well, maybe I'll find some time to try some more challenges. Nice to meet you all.
