Here is a second round of photos I shot today of Rita's Wrath in my part of Louisiana. There are some dead creatures among these shots just to warn those faint of stomach. Some completely amaze me the power of the storm surge felt in this community 10 miles south of me. Visit Once In A Lifetime Photography Go to Galleries, Hurricane Rita and then Hurricane Rita Part 2

Disturbing photos...

How far inland are they?

This second round of shots was done at Delcambre, Louisiana. They are approximately 10 miles (20 km) inland from a Bay. One very cool tool to use to see this area is Google Earth.

Just to be clear, morbidity usually refers to disease or trauma inflicted which is not fatal. The word you might be looking for is mortality.

Thanks for sharing your photos. Once it's out of our hair, we usually don't hear too much about these storms and how they affect other areas.

You will be going even closer to the point of landfall then...prepare yourself. I am still a little shocked at what I saw in person.

According to Meriam-Webster.com, morbidity is the quality or state of being morbid and morbid can mean grisly or gruesome. I'm feeling pretty confident morbidity was correctly used. :-/

After the storm passed my electicity went out for a couple days.

I never knew how miserable it was to sleep in 100+ degree temps...now I know. Its just horrible.

I only know a fraction of the peeps who have endured so much and lost so much. I lost nothing, but certainly gained just a speck of the pain they have gone through.

I reckon you are probably right. I really can't believe I'm "one of those" people who would point something like that out. I was probably pulling from my hospital days where we would have "M&M conferences" (morbidity and mortality) where we would talk behind closed door about possible mistakes made by the housestaff and how to learn from them. The understanding of the words was clear to us at least. Probably a "shop" thing...

A web search for definitions of "morbidity" shows DrAchoo to be correct, actually. Use Google and type "define: morbidity". The list is too long to post here, and it's all disease-related; it's a medical term with a very specific meaning. Definitions of "morbid" include:

# suggesting an unhealthy mental state; "morbid interest in death"; "morbid curiosity"
# ghoulish: suggesting the horror of death and decay; "morbid details"
# diseased: caused by or altered by or manifesting disease or pathology; "diseased tonsils"; "a morbid growth"; "pathologic tissue"; "pathological bodily processes"

It would appear an image can "be morbid" in one sense and yet not possess the quality of "morbidity", which is properly a medical term.

But does anyone care? Do I? I like the pix, and a couple of them are mildly morbid :-)
