Ok let's assume cheap does not mean dirt cheap.
I'm looking to get into a SLR while keeping my arms and legs. What I'd like to know is what would be suggested based on the following criteria:
1 - Used, maybe 3 - 4 years
2 - Megapixels, as many as possible for that age.
3 - Would like a lense included.
4 - Up to $600, Canadian - $2 American.
Right now I'm using a Canon S1 IS. It's got some great features but I get frustrated with a few things.
1 - Autofocus is sometimes slow and tedious.
2 - Manual focus... Well it claims to have it.
3 - External flash?
I've only just started taking DPs and I'm looking to start investing in extras, but am not sure I want spend more dollars on the S1 or to just start building up a SLR system.
Suggestions are appreciated.

I changed the title of this thread, unless you really were looking for a "cheap, used God" :) |

look for a used 300D or D70 and a 50mm f1.8, a decent start and you can get them cheap :)
HERE you can find a used 300D for $546, then you can get the 50mm f1.8 for $70 and you'll have a good start, I think you already have the CF card from your powershot so this is all you need to start.

You could probably get a D30 or maybe even a D60 (Canon).
Why not just get a new Nikon D50? $100 or $200 more and you'd be where you need to be... :) |

Although I'm a Nikon user, I just bought an Olympus e-300 from dell with 14-45 lens for $539. It is now my carry-a-round camera even though I bougt it to use the 50-200. So far I'm quite happy with the quality, etc. My only complaints have to do with being used to something else, and not any defeciencies with the camera. If you don't go over ISO 400 too often you can't do better for the $$$. Plus the camera w/ 14-45 fits in the center consoul of my car, something the Nikon would never do.

I know this is off-track, but possibly worth considering...
The PowerShot S2 IS corrects many of the annoying issues with the S1 IS (like low-light focusing), and offers 5 megapixels and even more zoom for $364.
The Fuji Finepix F10 doesn't have interchangeable lenses or a large zoom range (3X), but it DOES have many of the features normally reserved for a DSLR: 6.3 megapixels, instant-on, near zero shutter lag, extremely low noise (actually usable to ISO 800!), plus the additional benefits of a 2.5" screen, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and VGA movie mode. Not too shabby for a small $277 camera!
Either of these could satisfy you while you save up for a DSLR of your choice rather than settling for a 1st generation used model. |

I can put you into a slightly used 300D Canon with kit lens for $500.00, possibly a bit less. A friend has one for sale. Interested?

It's a buyer's market out there for used 300ds. So many people upgraded to the 350 that there are lots to be had and good deals to be found. FWIW, with the release of the 5d imminent, the same may soon be true of the 10d and 20d.
Me and Smartypants purchased both our cams used. Good deals can be found. |

if you're starting with only one lens, don't go for the 50mm 1.8, get the kit lens. A 50mm prime is far to limiting to only use that one lens.

I remember how outrageously expensive it seemed to but my first DSLR (the 300D). Now it's funny to think that I have several lenses that cost more than that. ;-) |

I do love the way the prices of a used DSLR come down enough for some people who think they could never afford a DSLR, now can.
I think thats one of the greatest things about technology and camera advacements. Out with the old, in with the new. And some people get some really great deals. |

Is that an official statistic and who says he is a casual shooter and not serious about his photography? You can't just say what would be best for someone without knowing their personality, style and aspirations. Look at Henri Cartier-Bresson and see if you can tell me what he would have chosen at the begining of his career had he the choice.

a 50mm prime is insanely limiting... you have to be able to admit that. The kit lens is much more versatile with one exception, speed. I'm really sick of people saying, "omg get the 50mm 1.8 it's cheap and fabulous". I agree that it is cheap and fabulous... BUT it's almost useless for a lot of indoor stuff because it's not wide enough. For the money, the kit lens has more bang for the buck imo. I'm really surprised that you're even arguing about this. Also I'm not even going to comment about Henri.
In the future, please do not make assumptions about what I am saying. I would really appreciate that.

To the OP, I have found a classified ad at my University for a 300D with a bag, 512mb CF card, and kit lens for $560.
Here.
edit: actually it doesn't say if it comes with the kit lens... however it is in the picture. I would ask to be sure if you're interested.
