I know I'm due for an eye-test but.......why do my images look sharp on my computer and then when I post them on dpc they look out of focus?

What resample/resize routines are you using?
06/06/2003 05:03:59 AM · #3
Has anyone got any good resample/resize tips? I always just use the default settings in PS, ie constrain proportions, bicubic resample and maintain the native camera 72pixel/inch resolution. What's best.

Patella has a tutorial

I don't have a focus issue but everytime I do a B&W it appears darker when I upload it to DPC. I can't figure out why but I just started making it a little lighter before uploading to compensate

Jak...I'm not sure I completely understand what your asking, however, I do my editing and then useing the software default settings resize to fit dpc rules. My software is fairly basic I think. I'll look at Patella's tutorial too - that'll be a huge learning curve!

OneSweetSin...are you thinking that I could compensate for the focusing before uploding[one for you orussell:)]?

I found I sometimes had to sharpen a little more than I liked before I uploaded with my 2.0 megapixel camera or the image was fuzzy.

With my 4.0 megapixel camera, it's much easier -- I can keep the resolution at 200 while resizing to 640 and don't have to sharpen a lot -- and then I can start lowering the resolution and quality of the .jpg when I save it as necessary in order to get down to 150k. I've never yet had to go all the way back to 72.

Your complaint was the quality of your image changed for the worse between your computer and dpc. Usually this is a problem with the resizing/resampling techniques being used. Thus my question. Patella's tutorial goes into this and is an excellent resource.

What software are you using to look at the images? Honestly I don't think Patella's tutorial is helpful for what you are asking. I would venture to say that you could check your images by opening them up in Internet Explorer to see how they will look or whatever your browser may be using. I know that early on, I was having trouble with my images being darker than what photoshop was showing me, so it may be a problem something like that where what you see is not what you're getting.

Good Luck. I am pretty limited in my knowledge of this stuff, but I'll be happy to help if its at all possible. - Bob

Patella's tutorial was great but it was meant for increasing image size.

I've had images look blurry on DPC when they didn't on my computer. I did as someone below suggested and opened the image in Internet Explorer (the version saved for upload to DPC). I placed my DPC window next to that one so I could compare the images side by side. The DPC image was noticeably more blurry!!
They are the same file, one displayed in DPC and the other opened in Explore and there is a huge difference.
Anyone else try this???

Can you quantify 'blurry' at all ? Is it as if each of the pixels is much larger and the whole image looks blocky ? Or does it just seem softer but at the same resolution ? Can you give a link to pictures that you are seeing as blurry ?

Also - are you on a dial-up connection or something faster like DSL/ cable ?

It doesn't look pixelated...just blurry, like jpeg compression loss of quality.
I am using dial up...
I will compare the images again and take a screen capture and post it for you to look at...
Thanks,

This was my original question, however.....I recently had the opportunity to visit dpc and view my lastest submission [had same in focus/out of focus problem at uploading] on a friends PC, it appeared sharp!.....I then checked the submission that instigated the original question - it looked better too.....how could this be?.....with ref.to Gordon's question to smellyf. my images look 'blurry' not 'blocky'.....all this begs the question 'when voting are we experiencing the quality of the images similarly, or, do they have a noticeable change in quality depending on the computer that they are viewed on?'

There is a huge difference in how images are displayed at home using Compuserve2000 as compared to opening a window in Internet Explorer and viewing the same page. It looks sharp in IE, same as at work...very sharp. I will have to vote in IE from now on. I hope I haven't given someone a lower score than they deserved based on image quality issues caused by Compuserve!!

I did not post the screen capture since I figured out what is going on.
I'm going to check the Properties in Compuserve and see if there is a setting for quality of images... Maybe I can set it to a higher quality setting and get clear images...

OK...
I found some property settings in Compuserve 2000 that fixed the problem. Under Access>Preferences>Internet Properties>General Tab
There is an option to compress images on web sites I visit and the choices are Always or Never. I switched to never and now my images are sharp!
For other ISP users (AOL and others) check your internet preferences and see if there is a similar setting.

All sounds frightingly techy....but I'll give it a go....keep alert for pathetic cries for help....
