Just wondering if there is something wrong with my monitor. Very few images I see on the DP challenges show grain or noise, yet everybody seems to see it in my images. I have also read a lot of comments on other photos that mention grain and noise, yet I never see any. I do see a lot of pixelation though with many of the photos. Is it my monitor? My contrast and brightness are at around 75-80%. |

Do you have examples you can post?

I looked at about 10 of your shots. I don't really see much noise. At least not the kind that would hurt your photo...

Forget it. I have no concept of how to post these things. I've tried at least 10 other times and I still don't get. it. |

You use just the number alone, not any of the part up to and including the equals sign:
The noise is most visible on the back of the car and on the tires. It's what causes the uneven texture. I thought this was a *positive* thing, for that style of photo, but I'm a big fan of believability, something that isn't very popular on DPC. |

I see the grain on this one, I thought it added to the photo and was put there specifically for that purpose. The noise is throughout but most visible on the back of the car and the shadowed part of the road.
btw - I like this photo.

The "grain" in this may be artifacts from the glass. I thought it was grain at first but have since withdrawn that idea; it's the glass. Maybe. |

You just need the image id (not the entire url)
In this one the blotchiness of the back of the car is what I see as noise. Though in this image I think it adds to the character and mood of the shot. Being B & W helps a lot.
In colour images the noise will look like blotches of different colour that don't seem to go together. Check wide spaces of what is supposed to be even in colour, like blue sky.

This is a good photo. I do see noise but, once again, it really adds to the photo. The noise is the "mottled" appearance in the blue, if that makes sense.
btw - I like this one too.

to keep noise down in general try using the lowest ISO possible on your camera. usually it's somewhere close to 100. in a few of your shots you have typed insainly high ISOs. like in shadow play you put 7040. if this is even possible on your camera, i don't know. as far as i can tell your camera's ISO can be set to 100, 200, 400 or auto. i have a feeling that you probably have had it on auto, which has in turned caused high ISOs.
i would try and set your camera to ISO 100, and see if things improve.

I would also like to know how you are post processing your photos. If you are increasing contrast greatly then this can bring out more of the noise that exists at the onset.
Neat Image, and other software, are programs that eliminate noise in a photo. Learn to use them and your images will improve greatly. There's Neat Image, Noise Ninja, Picture Cooler, Noiseware, and a host of others that you can download free trial versions from their websites to try out. Give them a whirl, they are not hard to learn. |

I thought you added the noise to the car shot, I liked it once I got used to it. As far as the others, I see it slightly. I'm not sure why you can't see the grain, it is a good possiblitity that it's your monitor, we had a simular problem. Is there any where you can use someone's computer to see them. My husband noticed problems with his pics after viewing on a computer at work, we then got a new monitor and it's all straight now.
