I've not submitted to any challenges for a while, partly due to being on holiday, but largely due to a lack of inspiration.
I've definitely learnt a lot from DPC, but haven't had a great deal of comments on my own photos... I guess people only see your portfolio when they like your challenge entries and then decide to check out your other stuff.
Anyway, basically I'd love lots of constructive criticism of my portfolio. In particular, please could people comment on the images I've put in here so far:

I'm also interested to hear tips on what alterations would improve any of the images, and I'd love it if anyone could have a go at improving any of them and posting them in this thread.

| I think that you have some nice shots. Just play with levels and curves some and see what happens. Posting a picture that you want comments on in the forums is a great idea. Sometimes it is the best way to get advice and learn. So keep postin'! I hope that someone else responds to this thread that could help you more than me! Good luck! |

Hiya Scales. Some nice shots there, I think my favourite of them is Coastline. I love the angle and perspective you've shot this from. Would be interesting to play with the curves/levels/contrast though as the colours (to me) are a bit flat.
Post more pics into the forum for comments, take some shots of the world around you......family, animals, people you work with. ;) my work mates see me coming, groan and duck for cover LOL.

Comments on the original john.
This is very rough 5 min job, done with selective colours and levels no feathering so bad outlines but it shows the kind of result.
I have probs with foreground interest, I liked the stones but it still looks better with them cropped out. but keep trying, someone here said,or quoted, its a good years work if you acheive 8 great images. |

I'm never too sure how best to use levels/curves etc.
I had a quick go at the Coastline shot using curves in PSP 7.
Do you think this is any better/worse??? I just tried to make a bit more contrast by lightening the light bits and darkening the dark bits - am I on the right lines?

I think your edit of the coastline is definetly better, you may even be able to boost the colors a little more using a selective color or hue/saturation layer. I hope you don't mind but I had a quick go at your castle shot. It's a beautiful scene that you captured. I made a quick list of steps on the photo details. You have some nice shots. :-)

Thanks so much for all your comments and advice.
Especially jenesis - I love your B&W version. Please see the comments I've added... I'd be really grateful if you could answer my questions about the specific changes you made, although I'm aware I've probably taken up too much of your time already.
BTW, it's actually a cathedral rather than a castle... in the town of St.David's in Wales, and it's really worth a visit. (Plus the beach is great for surfing!) |
