just got a comment that i cannot repeat (1) because it would give away my entry (2) because it's nasty

any way for the admins to implement a "quick flag" on current challenge comments that a recipient could switch on to alert admins/moderators to possible troll activity? said officials could keep their collective ears open and given any further evidence, as Deputy Fife would say, NIP IT!

Doesn't seem like too bad of an idea to me. Is there a reward for troll catching?

Something mounted on a plaque would be nice...
I like the idea of a `troll` button!

Maybe I am just not getting it. Correct me if I have this wrong. While a button that allows the site user to block from his own view a personaly objectionable image is an attack on Freedom of Speech, yet a button that lets the photographer report to the athorities any comments that he doesn't like is perfectly OK. Welcome to the New World Order!

My troll repellent failed me. I got my first really stupid comment. At least I hope it was a troll and not a human.

You must immediatly apply it twice, and then every other day for life...

now that the challenge is over, let's have a look at what provoked me to open this tread ...

for my entry Dark Side of the Egg, member jellokitty01 left this comment ... "Dark side of my d_ck"

this wasn't a comment on my entry that i found somehow insulting to my artistic or technical ability - this wasn't the member's religious or political leanings coming to bear on some statement my entry might have conveyed to them - it wasn't even a "cute" observation about my entry

it was a completely useless and offensive comment that has no place on the site

hopefully the new DPC will include measures to help eliminate the seemingly persistent "trolling" ...

I think "help" is the operative word here...nothing can eliminate the problem. Measures all members can take would be to
- NOT respond in the forums -- the troll's object is to get you upset and distracted from your purpose in being here, and taking up everyone's time discussing THEM instead of photography.
- Send a note to the admins with a copy of the inappropriate comment. Use the CONTACT link under the HELP menu.
- Wait for appropriate action. Realize that SOME comments which individual users find objectionable may still be "protected" free speech within site guidelines (NOT the cited example, however).

This is my personal assessment -- NOT any official policy of DPC or other moderators -- and the admins may have a different idea...

I've alerted an administrator and the situation has been dealt with. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Welcome to the irrational world of photo web sites, where only words can be sensored.

I think it is silly to get upset about a comment like this. It is totally harmless. Is it the d word you found so offense? Or just the fact he thought your photo was trash?

Whether a photo is liked or disliked, commenters could articulate that in a way that could be deemed useful and helpful. The whole point of having a comment section is for helpful comments. Reaction is welcome, but let's keep some decorum.

This is really getting stupid, people can post all of the thoughtless, distastful, or just plain bad photos that they want, but every user is supposed to leave thoughtful, helpful comments.

Just where is that written? I keep seeing people posting what this site is supposed to be about, and who is supposed to post here, but where are these rules?

This comment was not slanderous, and it was not aimed at a specific person, it was just a stupid comment. Guess what, unless you make this an invitation only site, you are going to get those. What is the point of starting a thread about it? Is this the worst thing anyone has ever said to you? I think it is kind of funny. The more moderators that are added, the more anal this site gets.

I really cannot see how this comment was any less useful than a "cute", "funny", or "ahhhh". Of course, people do not complain about the supposedly positive comments that are useless.

Trolling is a fact of the internet. Nothing will stop it. Every community site that exists has its own way of dealing with trolls, but all have to be reactive. You can never predict when a troll will strike, what they will say, etc.

What this means is that when you get involved in a community site online, you'll have to expect to see some trolling every now and then, because moderators can't remove offensive material until after it has appeared. How offended you get is really up to you. Yesterday/last night (depending on what timezone you're in), I brought an online friend of mine into the chat room, and he proceeded to be a complete dick, in a way that only he knows how... sorry for that, if anyone was annoyed... *hangs her head*. However, I've known that guy for a long time, I know why he does what he does, and because of that I know not to be offended by trolls. It's their ammunition against you.

If you don't get offended, comments like this one just seem silly. Stuff like that deserves to be removed and not left as comments on a photo in the site archives for all to see. But it's not worth getting angry about. As I said, expect to see this stuff from time to time, because we can't prevent it, and it's the nature of this thing we call the internet.

So, it is ok for you to say someone was a dick in the forums, but it is not ok for someone to refer to their own dick in a comment?

locked because we are not going to argue about this subject :)
