| I was wondering howmuch luck play in winninng a challenge? Do we get the same voters and the same number of voters? |

i dont think luck has anything to do with it.
But then i believe luck is for the unprepared and by going out and shooting a hoto youre prepared.
Do you mean in a big challenge where some people only vote for a percentage of the photos? |

| the photos show up randomly for every user. Some people can't vote on all images, so only vote on the min 20%, however, someone else who only votes on 20%, are voting on a different random set of pics. however, I'm sure there are people who selectively vote on only pics they like, so they may get more votes, but in the long run, if people like it...it will probably place high anyway no matter how many people vote on it. |

| I don't believe in luck. Fleeting expressions, amazing scenes, and "lucky shots" only become entries if the photographer is standing in the right spot with a camera set appropriately to capture it. Ribbons that don't fit those categories are generally setup carefully and intentionally. |

I would agree with Scalvert in this regard. One may have the good fortune to capture some amazing moment in time, but very rarely would one happen to get a superb photo simply due to happenstance.

This is as close to luck as you can get, but even then the photographer had to be ready for it.

| I guess luck has nothing to do with it. I was just thinking that images may not have the same set of voters and may affect the scores like the Affluence shot that had 18 ten votes as against the winner who had 14 ten votes. In the end it seems the scores averages out. Thanks for the replies. |

Luck by it's self will not win a ribbon.
Great skills with no luck will never win a ribbon
Great skills while being prepared and with a little luck will win ribbons.
So I say luck does have some part in winning at DPC. But luck alone will not do it. You have to be good (as most if not all ribbon winners have show us) and be prepared.

Ok, time for some science on this one. I did some rough statistical testing for the recent Illusions challenge. I only looked at the top four images and used the distribution of the votes.
Now all this assumes that the voter for each image represent a random sample from some population.
Bottom line the statiticain would not say they could tell the difference between the top two entries. The winner among those two could be the result of chance. The top entry would be better than the 3ed and 4th entry.
However no clear winners exist between the 2ed, 3ed, and 4th place finshers. Any one could be better than the other.
And of course this ignores all other possible random factors that you could add into the mix. |
