I'm looking for the best telephoto lens under $250 and stumbled upon these two.
I shoot sports, but would make use of the Sigma's macro too.

Which would you suggest?

Thanks
Eric

Since you're not getting the IS version, Sigma's lens has largely been considered to be of better optical quality than Canon's. Not sure about focusing speed - the Canon is slow, but I assume the Sigma is too.

any other opinions?

You can check out my profile for some sigma shots. It's been very good to me. Most of my recent shots have been with it.

I'm more interested in how they compare with regard to:

focusing speed
minimum focus distance
bokeh

I have the sigma - it's not a bad lens for the money - and if you are prepared to use a tripod the macro feature can be pretty useful. Of course it's not the fastest or sharpest glass going around, but at that price what is ?

I would rate this lense as slow as far as focus. It hunts quite a bit. As far as closeness I think it is pretty good at close focusing with the Macro switch on.

You can check the specs on that. I like the lense. I don't resent buying it. I do know however that there are better lenses out thier but for the price I think it is pretty good.

Sorry if this doesn't help

and Bokeh is pretty good as well.

If you are unsure, buy it at Ritz and take it back if you don't like it.

I have it (make sure you get the APO version. There is a new DG version i hear - should be better yet).

I have not used the canon, so cannot comment on the AF speed.
The sigma is sharp. I think the bokeh is ok..not sure i have any shots to show that specific aspect though.
I have these two - one of a bird caught in flight (probaably at 300mm) and a macro (handheld) when I first got the lens. The third shows some bokeh in the way background - again, see how sharp it is?

Practical Photography rated the Sigma a better buy than Canon, Nikon, and Tamron versions. Canon's version is about the same price, worse in construction, doesn't come with hood or lens case, and is soft past 200mm, even in the center. Unless you get the USM version, AF is slow for both.
I've used both and the Canon 75-300 is a poor lens. I'd recommend getting the APO in new DG version.
here is a link for the DG version at the German site, US site is slow to update.

Hey now, I have the 75-300 ;P.. FWIW, it's a USM version and the AF is still quite slow at times. I'm generally pleased with the quality for what I paid, but it could be better. If it wasn't for the IS, the Sigma would probably be my choice at anything in that range or cheaper.

I have the sigma, and I am really quite happy with it. A lot of my pictures are shot with that, for example:

What I'm trying to say that it is pretty sharp.. not too slow either; a combination of manual and auto focusing works quite well most of the time.

I had to make the same decision when I bought this lens, and the general opinion when I had asked around seemed to favor the Sigma. So, well, I bought it, and I'm pretty pleased :)

Yeah. I bought the Sigma a week ago. It's bloody awesome. Not a single trace of CA in the middle (very little in the corners). The focusing hunts sometimes in low light, but that's small.

Definately worth the 180 euros i paid for it

EDIT: And yeah.. i'm talking about the red-striped (APO) version

EDIT: I have the 50mm 1.8 on the side here. How much would reversing it in front of the sigma do?
