I think I am pretty well screwed, but I figured I would run this by the forum for fresh thoughts. Saturday morning the hard drive in my laptop gave up the ghost. Since then, I have found an enclosure, and plugged it into the USB port on my new system.
After doing this, the computer recognizes that there is a drive there, in this case "L", but shows no data what so ever. Properties are 0 bites used, 0 bites available. 2 different recovery programs do not see the drive at all, nor do Windows or Norton. A last ditch attempt to re-format failed, with out even a dialog box popping up.
Am I correct in guessing that the drive is bound for the circulr file, or is there anything else worth trying? (I know, dumb question, but I'm grasping at straws here.)

You're toast. Pass the butter, yum.

You could build a dust free box and take it apart but that is a lot of trouble. THe controller card could be bad. There should be a number on it and you can find the exact same one on ebay swap out the cards on them that may work. Not real expensive either.

Your Master Boot Record could be corrupt. Use a boot disk for your os and run "fdisk \mbr" for 95, 98se or Me. If you have Windows NT / 2000 / XP, you can boot from startup floppy disks or CD-ROM, choose repair option during setup, and run Recovery Console. When you are logged on, you can run FIXMBR command to fix MBR.
