Recently my cat had kittens and they are so darling, I have been trying over and over to get some cute photos of them. They are 2 weeks old and the eyes are open but they are still just creeping around not actually walking so I wanted to get photos of all three kittens together while I can. Other than the clothes basket that Mom has made her nursery and a small wicker basket I really haven't experimented with other things for photos but I would really welcome any suggestion for props and how to take a photo of 3 squirming kittens, how do you keep their attention long enough to get a photo before they start romping around?

| In about a week comes the day they learn to track with their eyes. they will all three sit for hours watching a camera pan back and forth - It only last a couple of days so take lots of photos before they move on the the next step - exploring. Then they only look down at the ground and their own feet for a while. |

Hey I still have one of the 3 kittens without a home...its a little orange fluffy kitten. Not sure yet if it is going to be striped like Mom and Grandpa. Can you believe they are only 2 weeks old and 2 of them are promised already. |

Get photos while you can. I have a photo of my kitten (well, 5 months), and you can just see the tip of my blurred finger moving out of the way after trying to hold the animal still long enough to focus the camera.

some random ideas/things that have helped me with pet shots:
- get as much light as you can to get that shutter speed up to keep it crisp.
- try closeup portraits to get their character, like THESE . .
- conversely, use your zoom to it's fullest to capture their action from a distance so they aren't disturbed by you, like this shot ...
- last but not least, you can try to fake it, like in this one ;) ..

I did a series of puppy photos last fall - similar to kittens, I imagine. Very squirmy. :) One of them is on the front page today of www.kodak.com. The little chair worked well for keeping them in one place at a time. I also got a bunch of beautiful shots by buying a package of that pillow batting/stuffing and plopping the dogs down into it. It looked like they were floating in clouds. Very cute. I agree that good bright lights and a quick shutter speed are probably the most important thing, and it's so much easier to do one animal at a time. I found that a bunch of them at once was really hard to do successfully.

First off, employ some help. Throw up something for a background, lock the mom in a different room somewhere, and if you want them all together, get a 3 sided basket or something you can shoot into. Maybe a box with one side cut out and a drop cloth in it. These are the kittens at one week: //www.pbase.com/image/12980174
These 2 kittens were 2 weeks old when I took these 2 pics for Despair and Stock Photo.

My friend just set them down and I got on my belly and started snapping away. That's a piece of white cloth for the background and I had one cliplight with 120W Halogen bulb. Some of the others got impatient and didn't want to stay still, or kept moving toward the camera. That is a really big problem. Once they get about 4 weeks old, you'll really have your hands full. Keeping them together is next to impossible, and keeping them still for more than 5 seconds is even harder. Good Luck!

I took this for glass and ended up submitting a shot with a glass subject instead although this one would've probably done better than the score I have now :)
The good thing was that he couldn't crawl away.

| I know how you feel, my cat had kittens about a year ago and it is impossible to make them stay still or get the picture you want, The best suggestion i can make is be spontaneous because these i found to be the best photos. |
