Yesterday we attended the MG Car Club meeting at Oulton Park, Cheshire. It was the 70th anniversary event which should give you an idea of the age of some of the cars. My Cavalier looked very out of place amongst the classic MG's, Jaguars & Triumphs on the car park!
Having been disappointed with the shots I took at Donington a few weeks ago I was determined to get something decent this time. I think the panning practice may be paying off.
This shot, with a 1/400s shutter because the tele-adapter will magnify any movement anyway, is uncropped.

I used 1/200s for most of my panning shots, dropping to 1/160s when the light got worse after lunch. This sort of speed seems to work well for me.
I think that more than a little luck went into getting this one.
Please take a look through the rest of the collection and let me know what you think, and if any stand out for you. I'm still trying to whittle them down to just the best.

I really dig the bottom shot, great use of panning.

Nice shots bod. In the old days, before you were born probably, the TR4 and TR6 were a blast to drive. I go back to SCCA racing in a '56 Porsche Speedster in California. |

Mr Lab, thank you.
John, thank you for making me feel young(ish) ; )
It looks like a lot of fun to drive the Triumphs, the racing was great. I can't begin to imagine how it feels having been spoiled by assisted-everything on modern cars.

I submitted this picture for the "Time" challenge. I have lots more from that day. Maybe I'll upload some them.

The panning on that shot is great, and I imagine the car was moving a fair bit faster than the ones I was shooting. Like a few commenters I'm not so keen on the crop - I think cropping into the car works best when you're exactly side on.
Please do upload some more, I look forward to seeing them.

I like shots 4, 5, 6, 9, 15 & 18. Here's why:
4: Good composition and the angle of the driver's head gives an impression of speed.
5: Colours, composition and subtle sense of speed given by blurred wheel and daisies.
6: Composition, colour, clarity. I just like the way it all fits together.
9: Great sense of the car having an owner/driver despite the fact that he/she isn't in the shot. It has a poignant feel to it.
15: Drama, sense of speed and the feeling that the driver who spun has been left behind by the other car zooming into the distance.
18: Colours, sharpness, clarity and a great sense of both speed and drama.
Some nice shots there - looks like it was a good day out.
Cheers

Thank you for taking the time to go through them like that, it's very helpful to get an unbiased view.
It really was a great day out. It's the first time I've attended a 'Club' meeting, rather than the bigger Touring Car and F3/GT meetings I usually go to, and it certainly won't be my last.

I don't think you need both those detail shots of the muffler, I think the one with the wider perspective is more effective. Some very good action shots, especially the wipe-out. I can't say I like the tight crop on some of the shots, it seems too simple to me. I like the shots of the cars on curves better, that show a little more track. I went to a Grand Am race not too long age (one week late for the "Transportation" challenge) at Phoenix International Raceway. It's hard getting good shots, I think yours are better than mine. The worse thing was, I didn't know they have photographers cages on the curves so you don't have to try to shoot through the fence. Maybe you didn't have that challenge. |

You're right about the muffler shots, I just couldn't decide which was better.
I'm very lucky in that the 2 tracks I go to have some very good fence-free areas. I'm guessing Phoenix is an oval where fences are essential?
