Tried to shoot this for the Circle challenge, but it needed more than Basic Editing so I couldn't enter it. My poor friend Kiki dove a million times for me, too! :) |

Amazing capture! There is a lot more to photography than DPC's challenge rules. Find another place to enter this image and it is sure to do well. Great job!

Wow! I had just hurriedly submitted my reflection shot right before work yesterday, and wasn't I tickled to see the positive responses when I got home last night. Some people asked to see the original and editing steps, so here goes:
Original "circle" shot of Kiki diving. This is straight from the camera. I had to be this far away from her in order to catch the entire reflection. I tried it standing closer to her to fill the frame, but then the reflection didn't form a circle. I knew I'd have to crop out the dock later. Couldn't move to the left and stand in the water because it was too deep (had to be deep enough so she could dive) and I didn't have a boat to work with. See the next one in the series...
This is the cropped version. You can see that there was no way to crop in a rectangular/square fashion to completely get rid of the dock. Here I tried a multitude of editing techniques, but there wasn't enough water rippling in the right direction with the right light reflection and without the reflection of her body to clone out the dock - at least with my level of "Photoshop" talent! Also tried to carve a copy of the opposite corner, mirror/rotate 180 degrees etc. but the outward rippling was off. See the final version where I cropped this in an ellipse and filled in with a black border.
I think I like the vignette effect, and the crop repeating the elliptical shape of the subject.
Seriously, I thank everyone who took the time to comment and suggested entering this elsewhere. You guys are awesome! |
