I remember playing with a small utility that could find out the actual number of actuations from a photo. I can't remember the name. Maybe someone here knows.

I don't have a dRebel, and I don't know if this addresses your problem at all, but with my D70 and certain lenses (e.g., the Sigma macro and the short 50mm), I have to have the manual focus ring set to highest Fstop (like F32). If it is not set to that, the AF stops working (freaked me out first time it happened). Is this making any sense? I wonder if it is something simple like that.

Thanks Ursula, camera's fixed now thankfully :))

This was on the exif info from the last shot taken.
Image Number : 1010131

So I guess that's how many images I've taken in the last yr.

Sorry. Didn't read far enough into the thread. I'm glad your camera is fixed now. If you don't mind me asking, was it expensive to fix?

Edit: Forget that too. I got to read the whole thread before asking. I'm glad they honoured your warranty :)

Nah.....that can't be right! Though I take a lot of sports shots I only have a 1G memory card and don't fill that every time I go out!!

I've been very curious to find out how many shots I've taken with my D70. Does anyone know how to find out this?

My AF died today. Same symptoms as Suemack. Got an extended warranty but likely will be without camera for Christmas. Hoping FutureShop is in the Giving Holiday Spirit.

A million shots in a year is unlikely - it roughly one every 30 seconds all day every day.

When I view my D70 Exif with EXIF Viewer 2, the very last Nikon Maker Note says "Pictures (total)". For my camera that amount does not match the file number. So that might be the counter for the total number of photos.

edit: (didn't note the date of the question)

I do actually focus manually alot, especially when I'm doing macro stuff with lots of detail and contrast. But in poor light or with low contrast I can't trust my eyes - I have very poor eyesight even with my glasses. Also, my warranty runs out in March, so I want to get this put to bed ASAP, so I don't forget about it (which I likely would).

Update:

FutureShop is letting me upgrade for $250 + Taxes. I explained the situation and they've agreed to exchange the 300D for the XT. If I had taken my chances and sent it in, and the repair would take longer than 60 days, I would have gotten the exchange for free (under the terms of my extended warranty). Chances are, with this problem it wouldn't be that long, by all indications from people I've talked to. Also the promotion that they were basing this exchange price on includes a 1 Gig card, so the deal is pretty sweet.

Anyways just thought I'd give Future Shop a little plug for being decent and understanding, at this time of year.

This has happened to me in the past. Changed lens , no different, changed battery , no different. Reset all camera functions and that seemed to fix it. The error happened whilst I was in multi shot mode. Now I only use single shot and its been fine. I sent if off for a service in April this year (after the fault) and it came back with no faults found.

Yeah, I did the reset thing, changed lenses, changed batteries, the whole shot, still no go. Anyway, it's packed up waiting to be couriered out tomorrow. Going to miss it but I'm sure I'll warm up to the XT in due course.
