First off I'm a Nikon user. I'm going to try to shoot some sport photography (little league games and soccer games) this summer and I need a long lens. I only have a 28-80 and a 85mm 1.8 prime. I'm saving up for the Nikkor 70-200 VR, but I don't have $1200 laying around quite yet. Recommendations? Should I stay away from anything in particular when looking for cheap hold-me-over lenses?
thanks,
Chris

jump on ebay and get something dirt cheap to see how you like a long lens, and to get an idea of lenghts, camera performance etc. |

I bought a Nikkor 70-300mm f4-5.6G as a cheap and light substitute for 70-200VR (only $129). It is not particularly good for sport photography (AF is slow, and it is f5.6 max aperture for most of the zoom range), but much beter than nothing :). Works reasonably well for other types of photography where speed is not an issue. You can check out some of my photos, many of recent ones are done with it.

I bought the Sigma55-200
It only costs $159 online at B&H. So far, I am very happy with it. I think that it is an excellent lens for the money. If you can wait until Sunday night, you can check out my "Birds" challenge entry that I took with that lens :) |

Keith do you have some examples of shots taken with that lens?
Can you post them?

I just checkeed KEH and it didn't seem like it had the best prices or selection. Perhaps ebay is the best bet then specifically for the "hold me over" lens.
Thanks,

How about this? It's a 100% crop. For $159, I'd say that's pretty amazing. |
